Patent number: 9232376Abstract: A method, a subscriber unit, and a system provide concurrent voice and data systems and methods that “steal bits” from voice frames for low-speed concurrent data. In this manner, concurrent voice and data is supported over protocols that require voice-only in current operation such as Project 25 (P25). The stealing of bits from voice is done in a manner that is transparent and not noticeable to users. The systems and methods enable replication of signaling on the downlink and wireline segments that is replaced on the uplink, encoding of interleaving blocks that extend across multiple Layer 2 voice logical data units (LDUs), flexibility in replacing voice data in LDUs, indication of the availability of the service and an interleaving schedule, notification of upcoming stealing events via signaling, and the like.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2013Date of Patent: January 5, 2016Assignee: MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS, INC.Inventors: Thomas J Senese, Nathanael P Kuehner, Todd A Leigh, Harish Natarahjan, Robert J Novorita, Mark Shahaf

Patent number: 8427996Abstract: A method for selecting a channel for group communications in a conventional multi-channel communication system comprises receiving, for a plurality of channels in the multi-channel communication system, a talkgroup assignment list for the channels that identifies a set of talkgroups assigned to use the corresponding channels. A subscriber unit receives talkgroup assignment lists for multiple different channels, determines a desired talkgroup, and selects a channel assigned to the desired talkgroup using the received talkgroup assignment. The talkgroup assignment list is developed for at least one channel in the multi-channel communication system and identifies a set of talkgroups assigned to use the corresponding channel. The list is transmitted for the channel to a subscriber unit and is used by the subscriber unit to register with the system and affiliate with a talkgroup supported by the channel in the conventional multi-channel communication system.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2008Date of Patent: April 23, 2013Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Timothy G. Woodward, Gerald R. Drobka, James E. Eastwood, Nathanael P. Kuehner, John G. Lambrou, Todd A. Leigh

Patent number: 8406799Abstract: A hosted inter-radio frequency subsystem interface (HIF) maintains a list of affiliated radio frequency subsystems (RFSSs), the list identifies at least one serving RFSS. An affiliation request is transmitted from the HIF to the home RFSS, which is a home RFSS of the group. The HIF receives from the serving RFSS a request to initiate an inter-RFSS group call to the group using HIF addressing. The HIF transmits a request to the home RFSS to initiate the inter-RFSS group call using serving RFSS addressing. A data packet from the home RFSS or the serving RFSS is received at the HIF. Upon receipt, the HIF transmits a copy of the data packet to the serving RFSS if the data packet was received from the home RFSS; otherwise, the HIF transmits a copy of the data packet to the home RFSS if the data packet was received from the serving RFSS.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 2010Date of Patent: March 26, 2013Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Trent J. Patent number: 8406800Abstract: A method and device enable establishing an inter-radio frequency subsystem interface (ISSI) unit-to-unit call between a calling unit of a calling home radio frequency subsystem (RFSS), and a called unit of a called home RFSS, through a hosted ISSI function (HIF). The method includes processing, at the HIF, a first invite message received from the calling home RFSS, wherein the first invite message includes a first request uniform resource identifier (URI) that designates an alias system unit identification (SU-ID). In response to the first invite message, transmitting, from the HIF to the called home RFSS, a second invite message, including a second request URI that designates a real SU-ID, wherein the HIF acts as the calling home RFSS. The unit-to-unit call is thus established between the calling unit and the called unit through the calling home RFSS, the HIF, and the called home RFSS.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 2010Date of Patent: March 26, 2013Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Trent J. Patent number: 8244782Abstract: A role-based operational directory facilitates identification of and communication with key contact personnel during an operation. Role-specific directory instances are created in the directory. The role-specific instances are created by a system operator and list the roles involved in an operation and the associations between the roles. The role-specific directory instance is advertised to a selected user, and the selected user associates with the role-specific directory instance. If the user is a key contact for the operation or is otherwise required or allowed to be associated with a role in the operation, the user also associates with a role from the list of roles in the role-specific directory instance. The directory instance is dynamically updated, modified, and tailored as necessary, and transmitted to the communication devices of the selected users of the role-specific directory instance.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2008Date of Patent: August 14, 2012Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Nathanael P Kuehner, Todd A Leigh

Patent number: 8116798Abstract: A method for indicating the status of communication channels assigned to a talkgroup includes: determining the channels in various sites in a conventional communication system that service a talkgroup for media transmissions between subscribers of the talkgroup; receiving notification of the status of transmission activity on the channels; and based on the notification, providing an indication of the status of the channels assigned to the talkgroup so that the talkgroup or subscribers of the talkgroup can choose to proceed with a talkgroup communication. The notification may be received by an infrastructure device in an RF site or a central controlling entity. The indication may be that the channel is free for transmissions or is busy.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2008Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Nathanael P. Publication number: 20120036567Abstract: A security gateway and an initiating device perform methods for establishing a security session. The methods includes the security gateway: receiving a first message from an initiating device, the first message including a first message authentication code; validating the first message using the message authentication code; and responsive to the validating, sending a second message to the initiating device, the second message including a timestamp and further including a second message authentication code for authenticating of the timestamp by the initiating device, wherein the first and second messages are used to establish the security session, and the authenticated timestamp is used for subsequent replay protection of messages between the security gateway and the initiating device. The method further includes the security gateway validating a dynamically assigned IP address for the initiating device to use in authorizing VPN traffic between the two devices.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2011Publication date: February 9, 2012Applicant: MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS, INC.Inventors: THOMAS J. Patent number: 6192029Abstract: A data communications system includes a server router (102), such as an access controller gateway, operably coupled to at least one client router (104), such as a base radio controller, by an asynchronous link, such as a LAN (106). The client router forwards data received from the server router and stored in the client router's outbound queue (110) synchronously to a device, such as a mobile station (202). The client router's outbound queue is maintained between a lower queue limit and an upper queue limit so as to both reduce the occurrence of data starvation and reduce the amount of data lost should the mobile station hand off to a new serving site. The server router calculates an optimum average send rate and transmits data in bursts at regular intervals, and adjusts the average send rate in response to changes in the outbound rate of the client router.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1998Date of Patent: February 20, 2001Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Rod Averbuch, Jeff Blanchette, Richard Van Egeren, Todd A.
