  • Patent number: 7097624
Abstract: A guide wire having a coil disposed over the guide wire, wherein the coil is integrally formed of a single wire and has regions of differing properties over its length. Some wire embodiments have longitudinally alternating layer segments having differing properties including radiopacity, lubricity, hydrophilicity, hemo-compatibility, flexibility, malleability, stiffness, and shape memory properties. A coil may have numerous distinct property segments, while being formed from only a single wire and requiring only two points for affixation to the guide wire.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 7, 2003
Date of Patent: August 29, 2006
    Assignee: Scimed Life Systems, Inc.
Inventors: Jon T. Campion, Todd D. Eungard, Pu Zhou
  • Patent number: 6832715
Abstract: A guidewire manufacturing assembly and method of forming an improved distal tip on a guidewire are disclosed. A guidewire may be an elongate shaft, a coil disposed along the length of the shaft, a holding fixture coupled to the shaft, a solder ball disposed to flux, and a heat source disposed proximate the solder ball to partially melt the solder ball and allow formation of an atraumatic distal tip.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 3, 2001
Date of Patent: December 21, 2004
    Assignee: SciMed Life Systems, Inc.
Inventors: Todd D. Eungard, Alan C. Matzen

Some wire embodiments have longitudinally alternating layer segments having differing properties including radiopacity, lubricity, hydrophilicity, hemo-compatibility, flexibility, malleability, stiffness, and shape memory properties. A coil formed according to the present invention may have numerous distinct property segments, while being formed from only a single wire and requiring only two points for affixation to the guide wire. One wire according to the present invention is made by coating a core wire with alternating materials having different properties. Another wire has alternating layer segments including radiopaque material, such as radiopaque loaded polymer, or a radiopaque metal, bonded to the core wire.
