    Abstract: A method of reconditioning barrels previously used in the storage of alcoholic beverages is disclosed. In particular, the barrels are exposed to heat at a controlled temperature well below the ignition point of wood in order to toast them in a manner favored by vintners and distillers. Apparatus for this controlled toasting process is disclosed. In addition, apparatus for the removal of a layer of wood from the inside of the barrels prior to toasting is also disclosed.
