Publication number: 20200227794Abstract: In an embodiment, a cooling plate comprises a first substrate and a second substrate; wherein the first substrate and the second substrate are adhesively bonded via an adhesive layer; wherein a conduit is formed between the first substrate and the second substrate having an inlet and an outlet that forms a flow field for a coolant to flow through; wherein the adhesion layer forms a tight fluid seal to prevent leakage of the coolant from the conduit to a bonded region proximal to the conduit area between the first substrate and the second substrate.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 10, 2019Publication date: July 16, 2020Inventors: Jason Mazza, Robert J. Schoenherr, Todd H. Fast, Roger M. Brisbane

Publication number: 20180358669Abstract: A rechargeable battery assembly includes battery cells, a plurality of heat spreaders, a first heat exchanger and a second heat exchanger. Each heat spreader includes a plate portion, a first end portion and a second end portion. The battery cells are disposed in a stacked arrangement, with the heat spreaders interleaved between adjacent ones of the battery cells. Fluidic channels includes a first port that is in fluidic communication with the first manifold and a second port that is in fluidic communication with the second manifold. The fluidic channels are disposed between the first and second fluidic manifolds. The stacked arrangement is interposed between the first heat exchanger and the second heat exchanger. The first end portions of the heat spreaders are in thermal contact with the first heat exchanger and the second end portions of the heat spreaders are in thermal contact with the second heat exchanger.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 7, 2017Publication date: December 13, 2018Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Roger M. Patent number: 9373872Abstract: Apparatus for protecting battery cells. In some embodiments, a battery may comprise a series of battery cells and one or more protective plates positioned between the adjacent battery cells. In some embodiments, the plates may also be configured to provide a cooling function relative to adjacent battery cells. The plate(s) may comprise a first section and a second section coupled with the first section. The plate may be configured to fail under predetermined conditions such that, upon experiencing the predetermined conditions, at least a portion of the second section is configured to separate from at least a portion of the first section.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 2013Date of Patent: June 21, 2016Assignee: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Barton W. McLaughlin, Todd H. Fast

Publication number: 20140131015Abstract: A cooling system for a battery pack includes a fluid source for providing cooling fluid and a turbulator in which the cooling fluid flows along an average flow direction. The turbulator includes a first support member, a second support member, a third support member, a first plurality of rods positioned between the first support member and the second support member, and a second plurality of rods positioned between the second and the third support members. The first plurality of rods is offset from the second plurality of rods in a direction perpendicular to the average flow direction. Finally, the first plurality of rods and the second plurality of rods disrupt fluid flow from the fluid source into non-laminar flow.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 15, 2012Publication date: May 15, 2014Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Chih-Cheng Hsu, Bao Wang, Todd H. Patent number: 6863317Abstract: A latch assembly for a swinging panel hinged to a vehicle body includes a latch body that is adapted to be attached to the vehicle body, a striker adapted to be attached to the swinging panel and engage the latch body in a closed position of the swinging panel, and a lever having first and second ends. The lever is pivotably attached to the latch body at a pivot point intermediate the first and second ends. The first end of the lever is operable to engage the striker. The latch assembly also includes a spring having one end attached to the lever between the second end and the pivot point and an opposite end fixed relative to the latch body for rotating the lever about the pivot point. A solenoid is attached to the second end of the lever. The solenoid is operable to rotate the lever about the pivot point to move the first end of the lever from a panel unlatched position to a panel latched position.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2003Date of Patent: March 8, 2005Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Darrel M. Alton, James M. Stanick, Todd H. Fast, James Herbert Shoemaker
