Patent number: 10874524Abstract: An expandable interbody device for use in the spine is configured to fit through Kambin's Triangle. The expandable interbody device can include a body defining a front end, a rear end and a plurality of sidewalls spanning between the front and rear ends, an expandable member pivotally attached to the body such that the expandable member pivots outwardly from one of the plurality of sidewalls and a screw threaded into the body through the rear end thereof. The expandable member defines an actuator flange that projects into the body. The screw abuts the actuator flange such that contracting the screw into the body causes the expandable member to pivot outwardly from the body.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2016Date of Patent: December 29, 2020Assignee: Spineology Inc.Inventor: Todd M. Patent number: 7753844Abstract: An apparatus for holding a surgical retractor comprises a support handle and a surgical retractor holding element pivotally attached to the support handle. A rod engages the retractor holder element at a position spaced from the pivotal attachment to the support handle with the rod being movable thereby pivoting the holding element to move the position of the retractor blade of the surgical retractor.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2004Date of Patent: July 13, 2010Assignee: Minnesota Scientific, Inc.Inventors: Todd W. Publication number: 20090254187Abstract: A tightenable joint for use in a surgical retractor system includes a monolithic, unitary joint body which has a top leg and a bottom leg. The top leg provides a top compression surface and the bottom leg provides a bottom compression surface operating on a ball. A handled cam is used between proximal ends of the top leg and the bottom leg. When the handle is thrown to tighten the joint, the proximal ends of the top leg and the bottom leg are driven apart by the cam, and a hinge or fulcrum portion on the joint body flexes between top and bottom leg portion such that the top compression surface and bottom compression surface tighten on the ball. The ball has flats that enable the ball to be positioned into the socket, and then an extension is fixed to the ball to prevent removal of the ball from the socket. The cam is defined with an eccentric surface relative to its pivot pin, which is received in an arcuate recess of a bearing plate.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 7, 2008Publication date: October 8, 2009Applicant: MINNESOTA SCIENTIFIC, INC.Inventor: Todd M. Publication number: 20090216087Abstract: A joint or clamp for a surgical retraction system uses a pivot linkage tightening mechanism. The pivot link primarily pivots to move one arm of the clamp relative to the other arm of the clamp. The handle contacts the clamp body at a friction interface of small radius to the handle pivot axis so little frictional torque is generated during tightening of the clamp. A handle pivot pin mostly translates above the handle pivot axis. The handle pivot pin has a center section which is offset, and the handle pivot pin can be received in any of numerous circumferential positions to absorb the tolerance stack for the clamp, resulting in a consistent and precise tightening mechanism achieved by a small throw of a short handle.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 26, 2008Publication date: August 27, 2009Applicant: Minnesota Scientific, Inc.Inventor: Todd M. Publication number: 20090076333Abstract: A flip control support connection in a surgical retractor system includes a receptacle head having a through-hole for receiving a nipple on a retractor blade in either of two directions. In one direction, flats on the receptacle head mate with flats on the nipple so the blade is rotationally fixed relative to the receptacle head and its handle. The handle/receptacle head can be hand-detached from the nipple/blade, flipped to the opposing orientation, and hand-reattached to provide a second mode of tissue retraction. In the second mode of tissue retraction, the flats on the receptacle head do not mate with the flats on the nipple, and the nipple/blade is free to pivot during retraction relative to the receptacle head/handle.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 17, 2007Publication date: March 19, 2009Applicant: LEVAHN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY HOLDING COMPANY, LLCInventor: Todd M. Publication number: 20090062619Abstract: The present invention provides method and apparatus that may be patient mounted for surgical retraction. The retractor disclosed herein may be positioned with a base plate resting against the patient's skin surface. In one embodiment, retractor blades extending into the patient's body from the base plate of the retractor device may be adapted to be inserted in a closed position for minimally invasive access, and adapted to be moved away from each other in a controlled fashion to create the desired surgical retraction of soft tissue. Because the blades are inserted in a closed position, the skin incision is small compared to the available exposure of nerves and delicate tissue.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 26, 2008Publication date: March 5, 2009Inventors: Todd M. Bjork, Dan McPhillips

Publication number: 20080312509Abstract: A U-type clamp has two arms and a base and tightens around cylindrical stock. The surface of the clamp that makes contact with the cylindrical stock is not itself entirely cylindrical in its loosened state. The preferred embodiment involves a first cylindrical profile extending around about ¾ of the contact surface which is intended to match the curvature of the post. The final ¼ or so of contact surface has a larger radius of curvature than the first cylindrical profile. The second cylindrical profile may also be offset relative to the first cylindrical profile.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 12, 2007Publication date: December 18, 2008Applicant: LEVAHN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY HOLDING COMPANY, LLCInventors: Steven Karl JACOBSON, Todd M. Publication number: 20080071145Abstract: A clamp is used to attach generally rectangular bar stock, such as existing Bookwalter/Codman rings, to a post in a surgical retractor system. The clamp interacts with corners of the ring at any of a wide range of widths and thicknesses, while still retaining a simple and intuitive tightening action such as through a rotational collar which absorbs some of the clamping force as a hoop stress. In the preferred arrangement, the clamp makes a tripod top/planar bottom contact with the generally rectangular bar stock of the ring. An articulating joint permits best fold up of the clamp, with a ball shaft which is constrained within the bisecting plane of the joint clamp. A spherical nut is used on the clamp bolt in one of the clamps, which permits some change in orientation of the clamp bolt when the clamp bolt is tightened using a cammed handle.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 12, 2007Publication date: March 20, 2008Applicant: LEVAHN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY HOLDING COMPANY, LLCInventors: Todd M. Patent number: 7309312Abstract: A retractor retaining device retains an otherwise hand-held retractor in a retracting position within a surgical wound. The retractor retaining device includes a clamp that is attachable to a retractor support that is positioned about the wound. A retaining plate is attached to the clamp and engages a flexible loop. The flexible loop is detachably attached to the retaining plate for engaging a handle of the hand held retractor such that the hand held retractor is retained in the retracting position.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2005Date of Patent: December 18, 2007Assignee: Minnesota Scientific, Inc.Inventors: Todd M.
