At least one starter roofing shingle of the starter course includes a first sealant line disposed on the front surface of the at least one starter roofing shingle that extends substantially across the length of the front surface of the at least one starter roofing shingle, and a second sealant line disposed on the back surface of the at least one starter roofing shingle that extends substantially across the length of the back surface of the at least one starter roofing shingle. The first sealant line is positioned opposite to the second sealant line at substantially the same distance along the width of the at least one starter roofing shingle.
