    Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing articles including collecting article information from a plurality of articles at associated locations of the articles. At the associated location, a class of service and a carrier is selected for the article. An article profile is generated as a function of the selected class of service and selected carrier. A label including the article profile information is then printed at the associated location. Information about one or more articles can be transmitted to a local storage location, or to a carrier location. The information collected from the plurality of articles will enable carriers in providing suitable equipment or personnel for the shipment of the articles.
