Patent number: 8571586Abstract: A method of communication comprises receiving a text message, starting a response timer, and monitoring transmission of a response message. If the response message has not been transmitted, it is determined whether the response timer has reached a timing threshold. If not, monitoring for transmission of the response message continues. If the response timer reaches the timing threshold without the response message being sent, it is determined whether an automatic standby message mode is enabled. If the automatic standby message mode is enabled, a STANDBY message is automatically transmitted and the response timer is restarted. Monitoring for response message transmission then continues. If a response message has not been transmitted, it is determined whether the response timer expired. If response timer has not expired, then monitoring response message transmission continues. If the response timer has expired without the response message being sent, transmission of subsequent response messages is disabled.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2010Date of Patent: October 29, 2013Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Thomas F. McGuffin, Tom Judd

Patent number: 8423276Abstract: Systems and methods are operable to determine that a navigation system has entered a structure. An exemplary embodiment monitors a magnetic field at an outdoor position, monitors a magnetic field at a current position, compares a characteristic of the monitored magnetic field at the current position with a corresponding characteristic of the outdoor magnetic field, and determines entry into the structure at least as a function of a change in the determined characteristic of the monitored magnetic field from the corresponding characteristic of the outdoor magnetic field.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2008Date of Patent: April 16, 2013Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventor: Tom Judd

Publication number: 20120173139Abstract: A method of providing position estimation with a navigation device comprises periodically recording magnetic field strength of an area substantially surrounding a navigation device as a user of the navigation device traverses a select pathway. The method combines the recorded magnetic field strength with measurements from at least a dead reckoning portion of the navigation device to provide position estimates along the select pathway. The method further corrects each of the position estimates from a starting position on the select pathway, where each of the corrected position estimates have an error value below one or more previous position estimates and any intervening positions between each of the one or more previous position estimates and the starting position, with the error value corresponding to an error threshold based on the previous position estimates.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 17, 2010Publication date: July 5, 2012Applicant: HONEYWELL INTERNATIONAL, INC.Inventors: Tom Judd, Bruce Graham, Toan Vu

Patent number: 8108171Abstract: Calibration systems and methods simultaneously calibrate a magnetic compass and gyroscopes. An exemplary embodiment rotates the field calibration system. Based upon the rotation sensed by the magnetic compass and the gyroscopes, the field calibration system determines compensation for both the magnetic compass and the gyroscopes.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2009Date of Patent: January 31, 2012Assignee: Honeywell International, Inc.Inventor: Tom Judd

Patent number: 7928724Abstract: Systems and methods for determining a directional movement of an object such as a wheeled vehicle. The system includes a magnet having a north pole and a south pole mounted to the object, a single magnetic sensor positioned such that the sensor can individually detect each magnetic pole as the object moves, the sensor configured to produce a first characteristic signal when a north pole is detected and a second characteristic signal when a south pole is detected, and a processing device in signal communication with the sensor, the processing device configured to determine a directional movement of the object based on a configuration of a signal doublet that includes the first and second characteristic signals. The methods include sensing the north and south poles as they pass the magnetic sensor and determining a direction based on an order in which the north and south poles are sensed.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2008Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: Honeywell International Inc.Inventors: Toan Vu, Tom Judd, Ron Fang, Bruce Graham

Publication number: 20050181787Abstract: A system and method for allowing changes to Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1) defined messages without initiating regulatory requirements. The system receives a message formatted according to ASN.1 compatible encoding rules, such as Basic Encoding Rules (BER) or Packed Encoding Rules (PER) and decodes the received message based on a previously stored configuration information file (CIF). In addition, the system encodes ASN.1 defined messages, which are to be sent, using ASN.1 compatible encoding rules based on the information stored in the CIF. The messages are transmitted and received according to a datalink protocol, such as the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) protocol or the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) protocol. In addition, the CIF also defines processing (beyond encoding/decoding) associated with the message.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 18, 2004Publication date: August 18, 2005Inventors: Tom Judd, Willard True, Mark Henninger, Bryan Rowe, Therin Dastrup, Cory Berg
