Abstract: A tray having electrodes placed at opposing sides with a sponge placed adjacent each electrode and a gel slab cast there between for use in performing electrophoresis on test samples, such as DNA fragments. An electrophoresis liquid buffer is placed and retained within the sponges preventing the need for immersing the gel slab. The gel slab is cast in place between the sponges, resulting in easier setup. In most cases the time required to perform electrophoresis is reduced. Additionally, unrestrained or free liquid buffer is eliminated, reducing the likelihood of hazardous spills. The combined effect of all these features is a device which is simpler, safer, and more efficient than prior gel electrophoresis devices.
