  • Patent number: 4174572
Abstract: A drafting instrument for tracing curves such as ellipses. The instrument includes a base which is movable over a graphics surface. A marking element is carried by a writing arm connected with the base by linkage means which guides the marking element along a predetermined curvilinear path. The linkage means includes a master arm pivotally mounted at one end on the base for sliding movement along the minor axis and pivotally mounted at its other end on the writing arm by an articulated joint which is adjustable along the writing arm to selectively vary the minor axis apex of the curve being drawn. The linkage means also includes a slave arm pivotally mounted between the base and a midportion of the master arm. Another articulated joint is mounted on the base for sliding movement along the minor axis and is adjustably connected with the writing arm for selectively varying the major axis apex of the curve being drawn.

  • Patent number: 4170824
Abstract: A compass for drawing geometric figures including ellipses and polygons of different sizes and shapes. The compass includes an upstanding center post having a lower point which supports the compass on the drawing surface. A disc forming a peripheral cam track is detachably mounted on a holder which in turn is pivotally mounted on a medial portion of the post. The disc is connected with a plunger which is slidable in the post for selectively adjusting the angle of the disc. A head member is rotatably mounted on an upper portion of the post. An adjustable multiplier link carrying a marking element is pivotally mounted at its upper end to the head member at a point which is radially spaced from the post a distance greater than the maximum radius of the cam track. In one embodiment a cam follower is suspended from the head member by a parallelogram linkage, and spring means is provided to urge the roller into contact with the cam track.
