  • Publication number: 20070073651
Abstract: This invention provides a system and method for responding to a user query. An identifier identifies an answer to a user query based on data in one or more structured data collections. A search engine in communication with the identifier searches, based on the answer, a systematically-generated, automatically-updated index of files to identify a file associated with the answer. A ranker in communication with the search engine ranks the identified files. A generator in communication with the search engine generates a response to the query based on a result of the searching. In one application, the system is used to provide an answer portal.

  • Publication number: 20070038634
Abstract: According to one aspect of the invention, a method for managing the navigation of a visitor to the World Wide Web is provided. A target profile is determined based on a combination of at least two known properties and a navigation path is associated with the target profile. The at least two known properties are related to the at least one of a query, world knowledge, and information about a visitor to the World Wide Web. The visitor may be automatically directed along the navigation path.

  • Publication number: 20070022109
Abstract: Systems and methods for answering user questions using databases annotated with answerable questions are disclosed. The database includes database items organized into columns. Each of the columns may have a question annotated thereto. The question is a parameterized question that is answerable by the database items in the column. A question answering algorithm is used to search the database for an annotated question corresponding to a question that needs to be answered.

  • Patent number: 7055094
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and system for transformation of an electronic document through learning transformation rules during training from the original electronic document using visual user feedback and applying the learned transformation rules to either the original electronic document or a second electronic document having a similar structure as the original document or all future instances of the original electronic document. Accordingly, the transformed document is customized to the user's preference learned during training. Preferably, the transformed document is created in a queriable form. For example, the original electronic document can be defined any type of mark-up language or electronic document generation language, such as Hypertext mark-up language (HTML), extended mark-up language (XML), portable data file (PDF) or Microsoft® Word, and the like and the transformed document is defined in a queriable language such as (XML) views and the like.

  • Patent number: 6240448
Abstract: Method and system for representing different types of information on a wide area network in a form suitable for access over an audio interface (12). Audio enabled pages (29) are created to link particular text data, which data can be from the World Wide Web (WWW). The audio enabled pages (29) can be retrieved by an audio web server (16, 18) for interpreting the pages into audio which is displayed at the audio interface (12). Audio input means are created to traverse the links of the audio enable pages (29). A user can use the keypad of the phone (12) or spoken commands to traverse the audio menus. In addition, dynamic audio input means can be created to selectively traverse a database of the WWW information.

  • Patent number: 5936659
Abstract: A method for broadcasting movies within channels of a wide band network by breaking the communications path into a number of logical channels and breaking each movie up into a number of segments of increasing size. The first segment of each movie is the smallest segment is transmitted in sequence over the first logical channel and repeated. The second segment of each movie which is proportionately larger than the first segment of each movie is transmitted in sequence over the second logical channel and repeated. This is repeated for the total number of segments which equals the total number of logical channels. The segments are broadcast in such a way that, once the first segment is received at a client location, the subsequent segments are also received in time, so that the movie can be viewed continuously.

  • Patent number: 5706435
Abstract: A method and system are provided for maintaining coherency between a server processor and a client processor that has a cache memory. The server may, for example, be a fixed location mobile unit support station. The client may, for example, be a palmtop computer. The server stores a plurality of data values, and the client stores a subset of the plurality of data values in the cache. The server processor periodically broadcasts invalidation reports to the client processor. Each respective invalidation report includes information identifying which, if any, of the plurality of data values have been updated within a predetermined period of time before the server processor broadcasts the respective invalidation report. The client processor determines, based on the invalidation reports, whether a selected data value in the cache memory of the client processor has been updated in the server processor since the selected data value was stored in the cache memory.
