Abstract: There are herein disclosed an additive for a lubricant or a fuel which comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of substituted hydroxyaromatic ester derivatives represented by the general formulae (I) and (II) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 to R.sup.5 are each an organic group having 6 or more carbon atoms, a, b, d, e, k and m are from 1 to 3, c, f, g, i and j are from 0 to 3, and h is from 0 to 4, but (f+g) is from 1 to 3, and (h+i) is from 1 to 6, an additive composition for a lubricant or a fuel, and a lubricating oil composition or a fuel composition containing the above-mentioned additive.The above-mentioned additive for the lubricant or the fuel is desirable as an ashless detergent excellent in high-temperature stability in place of a metal detergent, and the lubricating oil composition or the fuel composition containing this additive can suitably be used as the lubricant or the fuel for an internal combustion engine which can comply with future exhaust gas controls.

Abstract: Disclosed is a substance useful as a detergent-dispersant which has excellent stability at high temperatures and has an oxidation stability, a detergent-dispersant containing the same, a process of producing it, and fuel oil and lubricating oil composition comprising it.

Abstract: Overbased sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenates which are oil soluble, excellent in detergency dispersancy and have high base value, and an effective process for production of said overbased sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenates under conditions providing less sludge and less raw material recovery, and further a lubricating oil additives containing said overbased sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenates as a main ingredient and a lubricating oil composition which comprises said lubricating oil additive compounded in a lubricating oil are disclosed. Since the resulting overbased sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenates have high base value and excellent oil-solubility, they can be effectively utilized as lubricating oil additives.

Abstract: The working fluid for traction drive use has a particularly high traction coefficient at high temperatures and the principal ingredient thereof is a decahydronaphthalene compound substituted, on either one or both of the decahydronaphthalene rings, with two or three substituent groups which may be cyclohexyl groups, cyclohexyl alkyl groups, e.g. cyclohexyl methyl, cyclohexyl ethyl, 1-methyl-1-cyclohexyl ethyl and 1-methyl-1-(methylcyclohexyl) ethyl groups, or a combination thereof. The working fluid can be a mixture of a base oil of various types and the above mentioned decahydronaphthalene compound in an amount of 5 to 250 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the base oil.

Abstract: A process for introduction of styrenes in the side chain of substituted aromatic compounds, said side chain containing at least one hydrogen atom in the .alpha.-position thereof, is disclosed, comprising reacting the styrenes and the substituted aromatic compounds in the presence of (A) an alkali metal and (B) a compound containing a benzyloxy group or alkyl and/or aryl-substituted benzyloxy group. Use of (A) and (B) as a reaction accelerator permits to introduce the styrenes in the side chain of the substituted aromatic compounds in high yield and selectivity.

Abstract: Alkenyl-aromatic hydrocarbon derivatives are prepared by reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon with an alkenyl-aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a heteropoly acid and/or a salt thereof.
