Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided to suppress interference, such as interference attributable to increased network density, interference attributable to interference between uplink and downlink transmissions in a TDD system and/or interference attributable to D2D communications. In the context of a method, it is determined whether communication between an access point and a mobile terminal or between a mobile terminal and another mobile terminal is to be subjected to real-valued modulation or complex-valued modulation such that the modulation and a dominant form of interference for the mobile terminal are either both real-valued or both complex-valued. The method also includes providing for communication with the mobile terminal in accordance with the one of real-valued modulation or complex-valued modulation that was determined.

  • Publication number: 20140355703
Abstract: A multi-structured codebook includes a wideband codebook portion C(W1) and a frequency-selective codebook portion C(W2). The wideband portion C(W1) is characterized by a shifted set of indices for at least rank 1 such that the set of indices centers different groups of neighboring beams around a center beam in front of an antenna array. In one example, for rank 1 the indices run 24, 25, . . . 31, 0, 1, . . . 7. The frequency-selective portion C(W2) is characterized by having a non-equal number of entries for beams in a corresponding W1 codeword from the wideband codebook portion C(W1). In the examples some W1 codewords have corresponding W2 codewords with multiple same-beams and one or more different beams per polarization. A codeword W2 is selected from the frequency-selective codebook portion C(W2) and another codeword W1 is selected from the wideband codebook portion C(W1) for signaling channel conditions.

  • Patent number: 8897254
Abstract: An apparatus and method for selecting a beam group and a subset of beams in a communication system are disclosed. The method includes: measuring channel state information (CSI) on a downlink from a base station (920); identifying a selected beam group out of a set of beam groups according to a wideband property of the CSI (930); identifying a selected subset of beams in the selected beam group according to at least one subband (940). Wherein the characteristic of the set of beam groups depends on a transmission rank and the number of beams in the selected subset of beams is equal to the transmission rank. The method further includes: generating encoded feedback information identifying the selected beam group and the selected subset of beams for each subband in a double codebook format (950), transmitting the encoded feedback information to the base station.

  • Patent number: 8855026
Abstract: A network sends to a user equipment UE a reference signal configuration, and from receiving it the UE selects a codeword identifying a cooperative multipoint CoMP transmission scheme. There is a CoMP scheme selection codebook from which the UE selects the codeword corresponding to its recommended CoMP scheme. The UE sends to the network that codeword which identifies the CoMP transmission scheme, along with the CSI feedback characterizing the CoMP transmission scheme. From that codeword which the network receives it determines the UE's assumed CoMP transmission scheme, which the network uses to determine how the CSI feedback, received from the UE, was calculated by the UE (for example, joint transmission, or dynamic point selection with or without muting, or coordinating scheduling/beamforming). The network uses this information for selecting a CoMP transmission scheme for downlink CoMP transmissions to the UE.

  • Patent number: 8855658
Abstract: A network access node selects one chunk of spectrum from a plurality of chunks of spectrum to be a primary chunk for a particular cell; transmits in the primary chunk from a broadcast channel BCH that contains information needed by a terminal to at least perform initial cell access; and uses a synchronization channel SCH to indicate which chunk of the plurality of chunks is the primary chunk. A user equipment receives a SCH in a particular chunk of spectrum; determines from it that one chunk is a primary chunk for a particular cell; tunes its receiver to a BCH in the primary chunk and uses information received on the BCH to obtain initial access to the particular cell. In various embodiments the SCH is only in the primary chunk or the SCH has some indication (e.g., cell ID or relative position of primary chunk) telling which chunk is primary.

  • Publication number: 20140226582
Abstract: Methods, apparatus and computer program products provide channel state information (CS1) measurement and reporting for a segment carrier in certain situations. An apparatus such as a base station may determine whether CSI is needed for a channel of a segment carrier comprising a segment portion and a contiguous bandwidth extension of a backward compatible carrier utilized by a base station for wireless communications with a mobile terminal. In response to determining that CSI is needed, the apparatus configures the mobile terminal to communicate channel state information from the mobile terminal to the base station. In other embodiments, an apparatus such as a mobile terminal is configured to receive configuration data indicating whether CSI is to be measured by the mobile terminal, and measuring the CSI and communicating the CSI to the base station in response to the configuration data.

  • Patent number: 8743992
Abstract: A first precoding matrix W1 is selected from a first codebook comprising sets of rank specific precoding matrices. The first codebook is characterized by there being fewer precoding matrices associated with higher ranks than associated with lower ranks, and characterized by precoding matrices associated with ranks above a certain rank all being diagonal matrices. The selected first precoding matrix W1 is used to select a rank-specific second precoding matrix W2 from a second codebook, such that the selected first and second precoding matrices form a joint precoder specific to a desired rank. The second codebook is characterized by differently sized precoding matrices associated with each of N total ranks, in which N is an integer greater than one. Information on the joint precoder is reported to a network node over an uplink transmission channel.

  • Patent number: 8724572
Abstract: In an embodiment, state of a wireless channel on which information is received is measured; the measured state is used to select from a codebook a plurality of N codewords which optimize a predefined measure, and first and second codewords of the plurality are reported which best optimizes and next-best optimizes the predefined measure. If by example the above is done by a user equipment UE, in another embodiment the network receives first and second indications, searches a codebook using the first and second indications to find the first and second codewords; and utilizes them to improve the channel state information, such as by interpolating between them to find an estimate of the channel. In examples the channel is a MIMO channel that is estimated at two or more antenna ports, there are interpolation weights sent with the codeword indications, and the interpolating uses a geodesic algorithm.

  • Publication number: 20140056265
Abstract: Methods, apparatus and computer program products define additional resource elements of a physical resource block (PRB) to be allocated for the provision of channel state information reference signals in a manner that does not create issues relating to backwards compatibility for legacy mobile terminals. A method may include receiving a definition of a plurality of resource elements of a PRB to be allocated for provision of channel state information reference signals. At least some of the plurality of resource elements of the PRB that are allocated for the provision of channel state information reference signals correspond in position to resource elements of the PRB that are interpreted by a different type of mobile terminal to be muted. The method also causes channel state information reference signals to be received via the plurality of resource elements of the PRB that are allocated for the provision of channel state information reference signals.
