Patent number: 7147145Abstract: A package having a bottom wall with in-folded gusset tips includes a plurality of upstanding side walls, each side wall contiguous or sealed to its adjacent side walls, a sealed top and a sealed bottom wall. The sealed bottom wall is formed from opposing leading and trailing panels, intermediate, opposing gusset panels and a sixth panel. The gusset panels are folded inwardly toward one another to form triangular panels. The triangular panels are disposed interior of the leading and trailing panels. The ends of the gusset panels define triangular tips that are folded away from one another. The sixth panel has a length that is less than or equal to the distance between the gusset tips.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2005Date of Patent: December 12, 2006Assignee: Tetra Laval Holding & Finance, SAInventors: Peter Kortsmit, Tommy Ljungstrom

Publication number: 20060126275Abstract: A bottom folding assembly is used to form a package having a bottom wall with in-folded gusset tips. The assembly is configured to infold the bottom gusset panels, leading panel and trailing panel of a carton and to in-fold the gusset panel tips of the bottom wall for forming a sealed carton bottom. The bottom folding assembly includes a rotating drive shaft mounted transverse to a turret plane and spaced from a periphery of a turret path. A pair of opposing rotating members are disposed on either side of the rotational path of the turret and are operably mounted to the drive shaft. The rotating members are configured to rotate in a plane that is transverse to the turret plane. A pair of retaining members are operably mounted to the rotating drive shaft and are configured to rotate with the shaft. The retaining members are configured to rotate into an interior of the package and engage the gusset panel tips from the interior of the package.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2004Publication date: June 15, 2006Applicant: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance, S.A.Inventors: Peter Kortsmit, Tommy Ljungstrom

Publication number: 20040206052Abstract: A form, fill and seal packaging machine bottom fills a carton. The machine includes a lid application station for applying a lid to the carton open top at an upper edge and means for removing the carton from the mandrel. The carton is positioned on a conveyor and is conveyed to a filling station disposed along the conveyor for filling product into the carton. After filling, the carton is indexed to a bottom flap folding station for folding the bottom flaps toward one another and a bottom fin sealing station for sealing a portion of the bottom wall flaps to one another to form an elongated fin. A bottom panel folding station folds the bottom panels toward one another to form a sealed bottom wall and a discharge station discharges the packages from the machine. A method for forming the carton and a carton formed by the method are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 17, 2003Publication date: October 21, 2004Inventors: Gary Shean, Brian Kaczor, Manfred Schmid, Tommy Ljungstrom, Eric Lemanski

Patent number: 4964444Abstract: To provide a suitable filling atmosphere around a produce filling pipe on a packing machine and to make possible a rational, accurate cleaning of the filling pipe of the machine without having to dismantle and disassemble the filling pipe at a normal stoppage of the machine, the filling pipe is surrounded by a permanent tubular casing whose lower end is adapted so that it can be closed for cleaning with the aid of a detachable lid to form a container enclosing the filling pipe. The filling pipe, via a connecting means at the upper end of the casing, can be joined to an outer flow system to allow circulation of a cleansing agent.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1989Date of Patent: October 23, 1990Assignee: Roby Teknik AktiebolagInventors: Goran Hanerus, Tommy Ljungstrom

Patent number: 4790123Abstract: A method and machine for the manufacture of packing containers of the type where a number of packing container blanks are successively converted to packing containers, open at the top, which are filled with contents, shaped and sealed. The packing container blanks are advanced intermittently during the processing and filling between the different stations, which means especially in packing machines with several conveying elements, that the driving unit of the machine will be unevenly loaded and that the working of the machine will be uneven and jerky. To overcome this it is proposed in accordance with the invention, that the driving of the different conveying elements sould take place asynchronously in accordance with a similar but mutually offset pattern of movement.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1986Date of Patent: December 13, 1988Assignee: AB Tetra PakInventors: Tommy Ljungstrom, Anders Sjostrom
