Patent number: 6988684Abstract: A handle assembly has a handle arm mounted to a fore-end of a handle shaft, a handle grip rotatively mounted to one end of the handle arm, and a rotation support portion made of a metal for rotatively mounting the handle grip to handle arm. The handle grip is a substantially egg-shaped member made of a synthetic resin, and is rotatively provided on the outward side of the rotation support portion. The handle grip is shaped such that the user can grip the whole of the handle grip with his palm. The handle grip also has first through fourth recesses such that the user can grasp the handle grip by attaching the thumb to the third recess, or pinch the handle grip between the thumb and fingertips by placing the thumb and index finger in the first and second recesses. Accordingly, it is possible to conduct high-speed winding easily.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2003Date of Patent: January 24, 2006Assignee: Shimano Inc.Inventors: Hirokazu Hirayama, Kenichi Kawasaki, Tomoharu Sakurai

Patent number: 6790535Abstract: Parts inexpensively coated that yet are difficult to mar. The reel body 1 of a double bearing reel is given as an example of a part superficially coated in accordance with the invention. It includes a metallic base portion 10, an oxide film layer 11, a substrate paint film layer 12, and a finishing paint film layer 13. The finishing paint film layer 13 is formed by the application of a self-mending paint material. Forming the paint film layer on the surface of the reel body 1 by applying a self-mending paint material by the self-mending function of the paint material thus restores scratched portions if the surface is damaged due to scratching or the like. Therefore, scratches due to injuries tend not to remain on the coated part and as a result, scratches are unlikely to damage the surface of the body of the part. Moreover, forming the layer by applying a paint material facilitates low cost production.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2002Date of Patent: September 14, 2004Assignee: Shimano, Inc.Inventors: Yasushi Nishimura, Yasunori Hosoya, Tomoharu Sakurai, Chiyo Nishiku

Patent number: 6464158Abstract: For a round dual-bearing reel manufactured of metal, a handle attachment structure to impart a classic feel to the outward appearance of the reel unit, to prevent fishing line from getting tangled on, and debris from adhering to the outer surface of the handle. The handle attachment structure, for non-rotatively attaching a handle (2) to an end of a handle shaft (30) in which a male-threaded portion (30a) is formed, includes a handle arm (2a), a nut (28) and a retainer (29). The handle arm (2a) has an oblong hole (2c) with which the handle is mounted non-rotatively to the end of the handle shaft (30), and a non-circular accommodating recess (2d) of a predetermined depth formed around the oblong hole (2c) on an outer surface of the handle arm. The nut (28) has a polygonal nut portion (28), which is screwed to the end of the handle shaft (30).Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2000Date of Patent: October 15, 2002Assignee: Shimano Inc.Inventor: Tomoharu Sakurai

Patent number: 6409113Abstract: Dual-bearing reel body configured to improve style and decorativeness in the outward appearance of a dual-bearing reel unit having a protruding portion. The dual-bearing reel body (1), having a handle disposed on one side surface and a spool disposed inside the dual-bearing reel unit, includes a frame (5), a pair of side-covers (6) and (7) covering both sides of the frame, and a rod-mounting leg (4) for mounting the fishing rod. The frame (5) includes a pair of side-plates (8) and (9) between which the spool is disposed and connection members (10a) and (10b) for connecting the side-plates (8) and (9). On the side of the reel body (1) on which the handle is mounted, the proximal side-cover (7) and the proximal side-plate (9) form a first cylindrical portion (11a) and a second cylindrical portion (11b) staggered so that it intersects with an outer rim of the first cylindrical portion.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2000Date of Patent: June 25, 2002Assignee: Shimano Inc.Inventors: Hirokazu Hirayama, Tomoharu Sakurai
