  • Patent number: 4404804
Abstract: An internal combustion engine having a turbo-supercharger and a catalytic exhaust gas purifying device located downstream of the exhaust gas turbine. The exhaust passage is provided with a bypass passage in parallel with the exhaust gas turbine and a valve is provided for opening the bypass passage when the engine operating temperature is below a predetermined value so that the exhaust gas is passed through the bypass passage to the catalytic device. This arrangement is effective to heat the catalytic device rapidly to a working temperature.

  • Patent number: 4331113
Abstract: A device for effecting selective combustion in a multicylinder automobile engine including at least first and second engine cylinders comprises a shutter valve for interrupting the supply of a combustible air-fuel mixture to the first engine cylinder during a particular engine operating condition, for example, idling and deceleration. A single control valve assembly in the form of a diaphragm valve assembly is utilized to control the operation of the shutter valve and the supply of a fresh air into the first engine cylinder during the closure of the shutter valve.

  • Patent number: 4315488
Abstract: Rotary piston engine having a main intake port in one side housing of the casing. The side housing is further formed with a supercharging air port which is connected with a supercharging passage leading from an air pump. The supercharging air port is so formed that it is opened substantially simultaneously with and closed later than the main intake port. A control valve may be provided in the supercharging passage to open the passage when the main intake port is substantially closed.

  • Patent number: 4315489
Abstract: Rotary piston engine having a main intake port in one side housing of the casing. The side housing is further formed with a supercharging air port which is connected with a supercharging passage leading from an air pump. The supercharging air port is so formed that it is opened substantially simultaneously with and closed later than the main intake port. A timing valve is provided in the supercharging passage to open the passage cyclically so that the supercharging is performed at the end period of the intake stroke. A centrifugal device controls the valve timing so that the valve timing is advanced under an increased engine speed.

  • Patent number: 4278639
Abstract: A catalytic converter for effecting purification of automobile exhaust gases comprises a casing having inlet and outlet, at least two separate catalyst carriers within the casing, a spacer ring element for connecting the catalyst carriers together in longitudinally spaced and aligned relation to each other to provide a single unitary structure of catalyst carriers, and a cushioning layer positioned in compressed sandwich fashion between the unitary structure and the casing.

  • Patent number: 4235843
Abstract: A catalytic converter for removing noxious pollutants from exhaust gases particularly emitted from an automobile internal combustion engine comprises a housing having a pair of longitudinally spaced catalyst containers mounted therein between inlet and outlet. The housing is constituted by a top housing shell and a bottom housing shell positioned one above the other with respective flanges of the top and bottom housing shells joined together. Each of the catalyst containers is similarly constituted by an upper retainer plate and a lower retainer plate positioned one above the other with respective flanges of the upper and lower retainer plates joined together. The overlapped flanges of the upper and lower retainer plates for each catalyst container are sandwiched between the flanges of the top and bottom housing.

  • Patent number: 4117674
Abstract: A connection system for a connection between an exhaust port of an internal combustion engine and an intake port of a thermal reactor for substantially purifying exhaust gases emitted from the engine. An engine casing has an exhaust passage accommodating therein a tubular insert while the thermal reactor has an intake pipe leading into a reaction chamber. The tubular insert has a radially outwardly extending flange on one end and the intake pipe has a radially outwardly extending flange on one end. When the thermal reactor is operatively coupled to the engine, the flange on the tubular insert and the flange on the intake pipe are coupled to each other with a heat transmitting connecting member therebetween. An annular portion of the flange on the intake pipe is, when the reactor is thus coupled to the engine, allowed to elastically deform to generate a force with which the intake pipe and the tubular insert are relatively fixedly restrained in position.

  • Patent number: 4013098
Abstract: An inlet pipe for use in a thermal reactor employed in an automotive vehicle engine or the like, which inlet pipe is provided with a flange portion having a plurality of cut-out portions or notches formed at regular intervals on the outer periphery of the flange portion for decreasing the area which conducts heat absorbed by the inlet pipe with a consequent reduction in heat loss of the inlet pipe due to thermal conduction, thus the temperature of the inlet pipe is rapidly raised to and maintained at a high level for efficient combustion of the exhaust gas introduced into the reaction chamber with improved purification efficiency of the thermal reactor.

  • Patent number: 3943899
Abstract: Atmospheric pressure compensating means for an engine intake system, which includes an air bypass passage extending between the upstream side and downstream side of a throttle valve in an engine intake passage, and a control valve provided in the bypass passage for controlling the bypass passage area in accordance with pressure difference between the atmospheric pressure and suction pressure in said intake passage so that said passage area is increased in response to a decrease in said pressure difference.
