In particular, the present invention relates to detergents and cleaning compositions comprising specific hydroxyl compounds and having improved bleaching performance. More specifically, the present invention relates to detergents and cleaning compositions that comprise an effective amount of a specific type of bleach boosting agent, such as alkanediols as defined herein, glyceryl caprylate, 4-hydroxyacetophenone, tropolone, or a mixture of said bleach boosting agents, and a surfactant, and the use of said detergents and cleaning compositions for the preparation of a detergent and cleaning product for household, institutional and industrial application. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method of treating a bleachable stained and/or soiled substrate using the detergents and cleaning compositions according to the present invention.
