Patent number: 11184890Abstract: An interface circuit in an electronic device may contend for access to a shared communication channel on behalf of the electronic device and a recipient electronic device, where the access has a duration. Then, the electronic device may provide a schedule frame intended for the recipient electronic device that includes information that specifies one or more time slots during the duration that are associated with the recipient electronic device and one or more communication functions of the recipient electronic device in the one or more time slots. Moreover, the electronic device may provide a data frame with data intended for the recipient electronic device. In response, the electronic device may receive a response frame associated with the recipient electronic device, where the response frame is received during at least one of the one or more time slots.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2019Date of Patent: November 23, 2021Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Daniel R. Patent number: 11095119Abstract: A voltage of a first pin that is one of several pins of an external connector of a system is measured, while the first pin is un-driven except for being pulled to ground through a first resistance, and a second pin of the external connector is being used as a power supply rail of the system. The measured voltage is compared to a short circuit threshold and in response to that threshold being exceeded, the power supply voltage on the second pin is reduced. In such an embodiment, no test stimulus needs to be applied to any of the pins of the external connector. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 2019Date of Patent: August 17, 2021Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Roderick D. Bacon, Nagendra Bage Jayaraj, Derek J. Patent number: 9244492Abstract: Docking stations that may interface with various types of accessories. One example may physically and electrically support a connection to a portable computing device in either one or two orientations. One or more receptacles or dedicated or tethered cables may provide connections to one or more accessories. Examples may be able to authenticate and identify themselves to portable computing devices such that the devices know how to configure data outputs provided to the docking stations. An audio channel that converts digital audio signals and provides an analog audio signal at an audio jack may be included. Multiplexing circuitry that allows reversible connectors to be used may also be included.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2013Date of Patent: January 26, 2016Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Gerhard A. Schneider, Scott Krueger, Robert D. Watson, Alexei Kosut, Tony Chi Wang Ng

Publication number: 20140350891Abstract: The disclosed embodiments relate to a system for transmitting data from a sensor to a host. During operation, the system periodically samples data at the sensor with reference to a sensor clock. Next, the system uses the sensor clock to transmit the data from the sensor to the host, wherein the host operates with reference to a host clock, which is different than the sensor clock. During the transmission process, the system embeds a clock in the data, wherein the embedded clock can be extracted at the host and used to receive the transmitted data. In some embodiments, transmitting the data involves using voltage-mode signaling. In other embodiments, transmitting the data involves using current-mode signaling.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 24, 2013Publication date: November 27, 2014Applicant: Apple Inc.Inventors: Robert D. Patent number: 8762605Abstract: An adapter for connecting an accessory to a portable electronic device includes a first connector compatible with a connector of the portable electronic device and a second connector compatible with a connector of the accessory. The connectors of the accessory and the portable electronic device are otherwise incompatible with each other. The adapter provides two levels of authentication. First, the adapter authenticates itself to the portable electronic device. If this first authentication is successful, then the adapter authenticates the accessory to the adapter.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 2012Date of Patent: June 24, 2014Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey J.
