  • Patent number: 9897010
Abstract: Air Turbine Starter (ATS) systems are provided, as gas turbine engines including ATS systems. In one embodiment, a gas turbine engine includes an accessory gearbox (AGB) and an integrated Air Turbine Starter (ATS) system. The AGB includes a gearbox gear train within a gearbox housing. The integrated ATS system is removably installed on the AGB and includes an ATS having an air turbine and an output shaft coupled thereto. An ATS clutch module is coupled to the ATS output shaft. The ATS clutch module is further within the gearbox housing and mechanically couples the ATS output shaft to the gearbox gear train when the integrated ATS system is installed on the AGB.

  • Patent number: 8291715
Abstract: A bi-modal turbine assembly is provided for use in conjunction with a gas turbine engine. In one embodiment, the bi-modal turbine assembly includes a housing assembly having a flow passage therethrough, a turbine wheel rotatably mounted in the housing assembly and positioned so as to be driven by pressurized air flowing through the flow passage, an output shaft rotatably mounted in the housing assembly, and first and second gear trains disposed in the housing assembly. A switching device is also disposed in the housing assembly and configured to mechanically couple: (i) the first gear train between the turbine wheel and the output shaft in a first operational mode, and (ii) the second gear train between the turbine wheel and the output shaft in a second operational mode.

  • Patent number: 8146370
Abstract: A pneumatically driven turbine drive system is coupled to a gas turbine engine that includes low and high pressure compressors, low and high pressure turbines, a lock-up clutch, and at least one engine accessory driven by the high pressure compressor. The pneumatically driven turbine drive system selectively bleeds air discharged from the high pressure compressor and supplies it to an air turbine that is coupled to the at least one engine accessory. Thus, the system selectively reduces the power extracted from the high pressure compressor and is capable of supplying power back to the engine core. This, coupled with the bleed air that is diverted from the high pressure turbine and the low pressure turbine, allows the high pressure spool and the low pressure spool to run at lower speeds when high engine thrust is not needed or desired, but when the at least one engine accessory is still needed.

  • Publication number: 20110296812
Abstract: A thrust reverser actuation system includes a plurality of actuators, a power drive unit, and a gear set. Each actuator is coupled to receive an actuator input torque and is configured, upon receipt of the actuator input torque, to move between a stowed position and a deployed position. The power drive unit has only one output shaft, and is configured to supply a drive torque via the output shaft. The gear set is connected to the output shaft and is coupled to each of the actuators. The gear set is configured to receive the drive torque via the output shaft and to supply the actuator input torque to each of the actuators.
