  • Publication number: 20070282221
Abstract: Improved systems and related methods for x-ray assisted breast biopsy and ultrasound-assisted breast biopsy are described. In one preferred embodiment, for example, an apparatus for facilitating both x-ray assisted and ultrasound assisted breast biopsy is provided, comprising a biopsy table for supporting a patient in a prone position between first and second opposing ends thereof, the biopsy table having first and second openings, respectively, toward each of the first and second ends, through which the patient's breast may project depending on the patient's orientation on the biopsy table. The apparatus further comprises an ultrasound-assisted biopsy system positioned beneath the first opening, and an x-ray-assisted biopsy system positioned beneath the second opening. In other preferred embodiments, the ultrasound-assisted biopsy system and x-ray assisted biopsy system are mechanically interchangeable beneath a single opening.

  • Patent number: 6858839
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for aligning components of an ion optics system particularly as applied to mass spectroscopy apparatus. An apparatus comprises a base having a front face, a rear face and at least one side face, and at least two supports. Each of the supports has at least one face. Each of the supports is affixed to the base by alignment of a portion of at least one face of the base and a portion of at least one face of the support thereby resulting in the alignment of the supports relative to one another. At least one of the supports has attached thereto a component of an ion optics system for a mass spectrometer. In a mass spectroscopy apparatus the support mating faces and the base mating faces are configured and dimensioned such that, when the support mating faces are brought together in registration with the respective base mating faces, the components are optically aligned within acceptable tolerances. Also disclosed are apparatus for making electrical in high vacuum environments.

  • Patent number: 5777325
Abstract: A laser desorption ionization instrument for and method of measuring the molecular weight of large organic molecules includes a time of flight mass spectrometer (TOF MS). The TOF MS instrument provides optimized optic design for both DC and TLF modes. The invention further provides dynamic resolution enhancement for a given ejection pulse, along with optimized ion ejection pulses relative to the ion optic elements. The invention also provides means for compensating for difference in total kinetic energy among ions of different mass; high resolution detection means for improved sensitivity for large molecular weight species. The invention further provides x-y-z stage for sample presentation of both standard MALDI and gel or membrane based samples.
