The effective diameter of the drive pulley is increased based on a signal proportional to a vehicle speed and reduced based on a signal proportional to a throttle valve opening degree and a signal proportional to a speed ratio.

    Abstract: A control method controls a belt-and-pulley type continuously variable transmission having drive and driven pulleys mounted respectively on input and output shafts, a V-belt trained around the drive and driven pulleys, and an oil pressure source and an oil reservoir operatively coupled to first and second hydraulic pressure chambers for axially moving the movable conical members of the drive and driven pulleys to vary effective diameters of the drive and driven pulleys for thereby controlling a speed ratio. The movable conical members of the driver and driven pulleys are movable in synchronism with each other. The hydraulic pressure chamber of one of the driver and driven pulleys, the effective diameter of which is to become larger at that time, is first brought into communication with the oil pressure source.

    Abstract: In a power transmitting V-belt comprising an endless metal band mounted on a multiplicity of V-shaped metal blocks linked so that a semi-cylindrical recess provided on one metal block of each adjacent pair of V-shaped metal blocks is engaged by a semi cylindrical projection, such as a roller, associated with the other metal block of the adjacent pair to pivotally link the adjacent blocks. A relief portion having a suitable length is provided at an axially central portion of the recess to be recessed more deeply than the remainder of the recess. This allows uniform contact and satisfactory lubrication between the projection and the recess without interference from the central portion.

    Abstract: Disclosed is an improved laminated metallic belt consisting of at least two layers of an endless metallic band for use in a torque transmission device, which can transmit torque between two pulleys having variable effective radii, in combination with a plurality of metallic blocks which have surfaces contacting the innermost layer of the laminated metallic belt and are arranged along the laminated metallic belt. The metallic belt according to the present invention may be made of precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel or maraging steel which have favorable properties as to toughness, mechanical strength and the adaptability for welding required for making an endless laminated metallic belt, but lack the surface hardness to ensure relatively favorable durability. The durability of the steel is improved according to the present invention by a nitride layer and/or an electroless nickel plating layer formed on the side edges of the endless metallic band.

    Abstract: A V-belt transmission is provided which comprises V-groove pulleys and an endless belt surrounding the pulleys. A plurality of V-shaped belt engaging metallic members are positioned along the endless belt in the longitudinal direction thereof, each having a belt engaging surface for engaging the belt. A plurality of intermediate members are positioned between adjacent engaging members, with the intermediate members being positioned on the inside of the endless belt. Each of the engaging members includes a receiving surface for contacting the adjacent intermediate member, with at least one of the receiving surfaces being shaped to apply a force to the intermediate member in the longitudinal direction of the belt when the engaging member is brought into contact with the V-groove of the V-groove pulleys. The belt engaging surface of the engaging member is aligned with the mid-point of the height of the inclined side surfaces thereof which contact the V-groove of the V-groove pulleys.
