Patent number: 6221076Abstract: The invention is directed to a reamer for shaping a bone socket such as an acetabular cavity. The reamer comprises a cutting head for removing material from the socket during rotation of the cutting head. The cutting head comprises a number of relatively long main cutting edges, each of which extends in a direction from a base to a top of the reamer, and a number, higher than the number of main cutting edges, of relatively short peripheral cutting edges, which are located at the base and distributed at angulary spaced intervals about a rotational axis. The invention also provides a method for implanting a prosthesis component into a bone socket. During shaping of the bone socket, a top portion of the reamer is completely received in the bone socket to such an extent, that a cylindrical entrance portion is formed in the socket. The invention also provides a kit including a reamer and a prosthesis.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1998Date of Patent: April 24, 2001Assignee: Astra AktiebolagInventors: Björn Albrektsson, Lars Carlsson, Magnus Jacobsson, Tord Röstlund, Stig Wennberg

Patent number: 5997579Abstract: The present invention relates to a cup-shaped member for a hip joint prosthesis for implantation into a cavity in the bone tissue in the acetabulum, and more particularly to an acetabular cup-liner assembly, in which the acetabular cup has an outer surface intended to face the bone tissue in the acetabulum and an inner surface intended to face a liner. The liner has an outer surface intended to face the inner surface of the cup, and the cup is provided with an opening adapted to receive the liner. At least the parts of the liner corresponding to the parallel inside walls of the cup have dimensions equal to or a fraction less than the inner dimensions of the sidewalls. The parts of the surfaces of the inner side walls of the cup located adjacent to the opening of the cup are essentially parallel to each other. The surface of at least the parallel inner side walls of the cup is provided with a grooved region. The liner has an outer shape that is complementary to the inner shape of the cup.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1995Date of Patent: December 7, 1999Assignee: Astra AktiebolagInventors: Bjorn Albrektsson, Lars Carlsson, Magnus Jacobsson, Tord Rostlund, Stig Wennberg
