  • Patent number: 6505857
Abstract: Arrangement for a steering system (1) for a vehicle having a steering wheel (2) and a main shaft (3, 8, 10) which is connected to the steering wheel (2) and also suspended in the vehicle. The main shaft (3, 8, 10) is also connected to a steering gear which belongs to the steering system (1) and comprises an input shaft (12) for transmission of a rotary movement of the main shaft (3, 8, 10) to said steering gear. An end portion of said main shaft (3, 8, 10) facing the input shaft (12) is terminated by a first deformation (13) adapted for locking interaction with a second deformation (14) in the input shaft (12), by means of which said rotary movement is transmitted to the steering gear. A method is also disclosed for mounting a steering system (1) in a vehicle. By means of the invention, an improved mounting of a steering system (1) in a vehicle is provided, in particular a simple mounting and a secure connection between a main shaft and a pinion of a steering gear.

  • Publication number: 20020000714
Abstract: The invention concerns an arrangement for a vehicle steering-wheel (1) comprising a hub (4) for fixing to a steering column (2), a bowl-shaped element (5, 6, 7) connected to the hub (4) with at least one spoke (8) which connects the said bowl-shaped element (5, 6, 7) to a steering wheel rim (9), the hub (4), the bowl-shaped element (5, 6, 7) and the spoke (8) being integrally formed as a single material item. The invention is characterized in that the said bowl element (5, 6, 7) constitutes a casing which encloses an airbag (12) and means (13) for inflating the airbag (12) in the event of a collision involving the vehicle, a wall section (5, 6) of the said bowl-shaped element (5, 6, 7) forming, at least partly, a part of the said means (13) for inflating the airbag (12).

  • Patent number: 6325411
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for suspending an airbag module with respect to a steering wheel in a vehicle. The apparatus includes a steering wheel console mounted on the steering wheel, an elastic attenuating body mounted on both the airbag module and the steering wheel console for attenuating vibration therebetween, and an anchor extending through an aperture in the steering wheel console at an angle and rigidly mounted with respect to the airbag module, so that the anchor guides the airbag module in a predetermined direction during inflation of the airbag.

  • Patent number: 6170874
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for protecting the occupant of a motor vehicle including a seat belt for restraining the occupant and a stress-bearing structure are disclosed. The apparatus includes a steering shaft, a steering column supporting the steering shaft, the steering column displaceably mounted with respect to the stress-bearing structure, a first energy absorber for absorbing energy upon displacement of the steering column with respect to the stress-bearing structure by the occupant, a sensor for detecting a condition in which the occupant is restrained by the seat belt, a second energy absorber for absorbing energy upon displacement of the steering column with respect to the stress-bearing structure by the occupant, and a lock for permitting absorption of energy by the second energy-absorbing unit by displacement of the steering column with respect to the stress-bearing structure by the occupant when the condition is detected by the sensor.
