    Abstract: An .alpha.-sulfofatty acid ester useful as the intermediate of active ingredient for detergent can be prepared by making a saturated fatty acid having 8 to 20 carbon atoms react with a mixture gas consisting of an inert gas and SO.sub.3 in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
