Patent number: 4870874Abstract: A power transmission, particularly adapted for motorcycle application, in which a first planetary gear reduction system reduces power output from the starter motor for starting the engine and a second planetary gear reduction system operated in cooperation with the first system enables power output from the starter motor to operate the vehicle in reverse.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1987Date of Patent: October 3, 1989Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Toshifumi Ito

Patent number: 4869332Abstract: A reverse drive for small vehicles in which an output shaft of a second motor, which is different from the internal combustion engine for running use, can be connected to the transmission line leading from the internal combustion engine to the rear wheel so as to rotate the rear wheel in reverse. The second motor is a starter motor capable of normal and reverse rotations, the normal rotation of the starter motor being transmitted to the internal combustion engine for driving use through a starting clutch, and the reverse rotation of said starter motor being transmitted to the power transmission line through a reverse clutch. Otherwise, the second motor may be a starter motor capable of rotating only in one direction. In this case, the output of the starter motor is transmitted to the output side of the power transmission line through a reverse transmission line while the output transmission line is interrupted.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1986Date of Patent: September 26, 1989Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Haruyasu Fujita, Yoshiaki Hirosawa, Kouichi Hikichi, Morio Sato, Yoshiaki Hirakata, Toshifumi Ito

Patent number: 4763538Abstract: A reverse drive for small vehicles in which an output shaft of a starter motor disposed independently of a driving internal combustion engine can be coupled to a power transmission system between the internal combustion engine and a rear wheel in such a way that the rear wheel is driven in the reverse direction. The starter motor may be capable of normal and reverse rotations, the normal rotation of the starter motor being transmitted to the internal combustion engine through a starting clutch, and the reverse rotation of said starter motor being transmitted to the power transmission system through a reverse clutch. Otherwise, the starter motor may be capable of rotating only in one direction. In this case, the output of the starter motor is transmitted to the output side of the power transmission system through a reverse transmission line while the power transmission system is interrupted.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1986Date of Patent: August 16, 1988Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Haruyasu Fujita, Yoshiaki Hirosawa, Toshifumi Ito

Patent number: 4668116Abstract: In a combustion engine, a flywheel is coupled to a crankshaft, the flywheel and crankshaft being in splined engagement. To eliminate play between the flywheel and crankshaft which occurs under conditions of torque fluctuation due to clearance between the meshing teeth, a deformable member is provided to reduce this clearance. The deformable member includes a bore with teeth therein also in mesh with the crankshaft teeth. In one embodiment, the deformable member is a hub on the flywheel compressed by an element movable against it by a bolt. Opposed tapered surfaces compress the deformable member as the bolt is tightened. In another embodiment, the deformable member is a separate element and is tapered and fits within a tapered inner surface on the bore of the flywheel. As the deformable member is pressed against the flywheel by the bolt, it is simultaneously compressed by the action of the opposed tapered surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1985Date of Patent: May 26, 1987Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Toshifumi Ito

Patent number: 4648359Abstract: An internal combustion engine for a motorcycle, comprising a crankshaft extending transversely of the motorcycle and having at least two crankpin portions, power cylinders consisting of a first bank of cylinders inclined forwardly from a vertical plane which passes through the axis of rotation of the crankshaft and a second bank of cylinders inclined rearwardly from the plane, the angle between the first and second banks of cylinders being less than 90 degrees about the axis of rotation of the crankshaft. One of the cylinders of the first bank and one of the cylinders of the second bank are associated with one of the crankpin portions and another cylinder of the first bank and another cylinder of the second bank are associated with the other crankpin portion. At least two camshafts are provided one for each of the aforesaid banks and are driven by drive means arranged in laterally middle portions of the engine casing structure.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1986Date of Patent: March 10, 1987Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Toshifumi Ito

Patent number: 4530681Abstract: A motorcycle engine having a tensioning mechanism for a cam chain. The mechanism includes a guide on the slack side of the chain which is controlled by two spaced pivotally-mounted links. One of the two links is biased by a spring to tension the cam chain. A sliding rod mechanism prevents facile motion of the links to lessen tension in the cam chain while allowing free tightening. The links are of such proportional extent that the end of the guide nearest the driving sprocket provides the tensioning motion while the end of the guide adjacent the driven sprocket remains tangent thereto.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1983Date of Patent: July 23, 1985Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Noboru Kurata, Toshifumi Ito

Patent number: 4476951Abstract: At least part of upper surfaces of the transmission case and the crankcase is formed as a generally flat surface, on which the generator and the starting motor are arranged in end-to-end facing relation, with their drive shafts disposed parallel with the crankshaft, to thereby reduce the axial size of the engine. The generator is arranged close to the cylinders of the engine, and has a casing in which a forced-air cooling fan is mounted, and which has its peripheral wall provided with port means located at an upper portion and having a downwardly directed opening, and also provided with a through hole at a lower portion. The port means and the through hole are each adapted to effect suction or discharge of cooling air into or out of the casing.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1982Date of Patent: October 16, 1984Assignee: Honda Motor Co., Ltd.Inventor: Toshifumi Ito
