  • Patent number: 7245571
Abstract: An optical disk drive that can automatically adjust an erase power to an appropriate level to keep the error rate low and not to shorten the life of an erasable optical disk. The optical disk drive obtains a reference erasing modulation factor using a test area of the erasable optical disk when the disk is set. While overwriting data in the erasable optical disk, the optical disk drive obtains an erasing modulation factor based on the read signal detected in an erased region from time to time to adjust the erase power so that the erase power continually adjusted to the appropriate level.

  • Publication number: 20070109939
Abstract: An evaluation value calculating apparatus includes the following elements. A difference metric selecting unit selects a difference metric for a specific recorded sequence in recorded sequences obtained in a maximum likelihood decoding process when information expressed with marks and spaces on a recording medium is played back, the difference metric being obtained in the maximum likelihood decoding process. A difference metric error value calculating unit determines a difference metric error value for the selected difference metric using a calculation method that is selected according to an edge shift direction of each of the marks on a time axis, the difference metric error value representing an error from an ideal difference metric and the edge shift direction on the time axis. A statistical processing unit performs statistical processing on the determined difference metric error value on the basis of each of states of path meeting points to generate an evaluation value.

  • Patent number: 6359847
Abstract: In recording on an optical disk of the write-once variety, the light beam is switched to write intensity during the durations of write pulses and to read intensity during their spacings. The read intensity beam reads the wobbling pregroove in the disk for tracking control, disk speed control, track address detection, and so forth. A beam Intensity control system is provided for constantly holding the read intensity, as well as write intensity, of the laser beam at a target value. Included are a read intensity target generator for generating a read intensity target signal, and a read intensity control circuit for supplying to a laser driver circuit a read intensity control signal indicative of the difference between the read intensity target signal and an actual read intensity signal.

  • Patent number: 5717679
Abstract: An apparatus for use with a recordable compact disk having an optically discernible pregroove formed thereon to provide a multiturn spiral track along which data pits are to be formed. Each pregroove turn is partly wobbled to represent addresses. Since wobble detection is easy to be impeded by track eccentricity with respect to the axis of disk rotation, a pair of compensator circuits are connected one to each output of a composite photodetector for eliminating from the photodetector output signal a frequency component due to track eccentricity. Each compensator circuit comprises a variable gain amplifier circuit, and a feedback loop for varying the amplifier gain in inverse proportion to the amplitude of the frequency component due to track eccentricity.
