Patent number: 5860852Abstract: An oscillating spindle sander having a spindle rotatably mounted in a cabinet. An external end of the spindle is adapted to receive a sanding drum. An upper cam pulley is fixedly attached to the spindle and a lower cam pulley is rotatably attached to the spindle within the cabinet. The upper and lower cam pulleys have face-to-face annular cam surfaces having complementary sinusoidal contours with diametrically opposite lobes and diametrically opposite valleys. The upper and lower cam pulleys have a toothed rim connected by individual drive belts to a common drive pulley rotated by an electric motor. The number of teeth on the toothed rims of the upper and lower cam pulleys are different, causing the upper and lower cam pulleys to rotate relative to each other. The annular cam surfaces cause the upper cam pulley and the spindle to be oscillated in a vertical direction in response to the relative rotation between upper and lower cam pulleys.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1996Date of Patent: January 19, 1999Assignee: Ryobi North America Inc.Inventors: Toshimitsu Hashii, Robert C. Patent number: 5681213Abstract: A sanding tool for grinding a workpiece to be worked has a housing in which an electric motor is accommodated and a grinding assembly operatively connected to an output shaft of the electric motor to be swingable to perform a grinding operation, and the grinding assembly comprises a driving plate operatively connected to the output shaft of the electric motor to be swingable, a grinding plate attached to the driving plate to grind the workpiece and a member for operatively connecting the driving plate and the grinding plate such that the grinding plate is changed in an attaching position thereof in a plane parallel to a surface of the workpiece to be ground. First and second engaging members are formed to the grinding plate and the driving plate, respectively, for achieving an engagement therebetween when the grinding plate is pushed against the driving plate, and when the first and second engaging members are engaged, the rotational motion of the grinding plate to the driving plate is restricted.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1996Date of Patent: October 28, 1997Assignee: Ryobi LimitedInventor: Toshimitsu Hashii
