    Abstract: An antitheft mechanism for an electronic device to be used in a car has three modes of operation. A normal operation mode permits continuous operation of the device. A line mode permits normal operation for a limited time after which it is replaced by a theft mode. The theft mode inhibits normal operation of the device until a secret code is entered into the device to return it to the normal mode or until a specified common operation of the device returns it to the line mode.
