    Abstract: A video camera including an optical zoom mechanism and an electronic zoom circuit which is used at a time that a magnification of the optical zoom mechanism reaches a limit thereof or a time that a picture stabilization is to be performed. If a magnification of an electronic zoom is smaller than “1.2” at a timing when a stabilization switch is turned-on, a microcomputer not only gradually increases an electronic zoom magnification up to “1.2” and but also gradually decreases an optical zoom magnification. If the magnification of the electronic zoom is smaller than “1.2” at a timing when the stabilization switch is turned-off, the microcomputer gradually decreases the electronic zoom magnification to an electronic zoom magnification of a timing when the stabilization switch is turned-on, and gradually increases the optical zoom magnification. Thus, a sudden change of a view angle due to a change of the electronic zoom magnification is suppressed.

A distance detecting apparatus detects distance from the first and the second imaging device to an object for imaging. A first electric zooming apparatus receives a signal from the first imaging device and extracts image data of a predetermined area from the first image. A second electric zooming apparatus receives a signal from the second imaging device and extracts image data of a predetermined area of image. A control device controls the extraction of image data according to the distance information. According to the distance information, the extracting area is moved so that the focused object is located on the center of each of the provided images. As a result, the convergence angel is substantially changed according to the distance between the object and the imaging device.

Amounts of horizontal movement of the subjects which are detected for detecting areas set in an image area constituting a 2D image are compared after being assigned plus or minus signs depending on the direction of the movement, thereby to classify all the detecting areas into two types of detecting areas in such a manner that the detecting areas where a relatively large amount of horizontal movement is detected are taken as first detecting areas, while the detecting areas where a relatively small amount of horizontal movement is detected are taken as second detecting areas. A target area is set in a peripheral portion in the image area, to judge which of the total number of first detecting areas existing in the target area and the total number of second detecting areas existing in the target area is larger.
