    Abstract: A catalytic device is disclosed, in which a catalytic layer is electrically heated and activated. In one form, the quantity of the catalytic layer is greater near a gas outlet than near a gas inlet of the device. In another form, the catalytic layer is disposed only near the gas outlet. The catalytic layer can be quickly activated so as to promote purification of exhaust emissions immediately following the ignition.

    Abstract: A fuel feed control system and method for an internal combustion engine is provided with a device for setting the quantity of fuel and a fuel injector for feeding fuel in accordance with the fuel quantity set by the fuel quantity setting device. The fuel quantity setting device is provided with a device for estimating the quantity of air to be inducted on the basis of the result of detection of the quantity of inducted air at an inducted air quantity detection time, inducted air quantity information detected before the inducted air quantity detection time and predicted information. The inducted air quantity estimation device is provided with a device for changing the predicted information so that, when a transient operation state of the engine is detected by a transient operation state detector, the estimated quantity of inducted air and a real quantity of inducted air become closer to each other.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling operating conditions of an internal combustion engine based upon sensed operating parameters of the engine expressed in the form of pulse signals, wherein the frequency of the pulses is representative of the sensed parameter. The pulse intervals of the sensed operating parameter signals are measured to the fractional level before being stored and employed by a CPU to calculate data applied to control predetermined operating conditions of the engine, such as the fuel flow rate and the ignition timing. The inventive method and apparatus attain greater operating stability for steady-state operations and excellent response under transient conditions of the engine.

    Abstract: Stabilization of the engine speed is effected rapidly particularly during idle running because there is provided a generator control means capable of suppressing or stopping power generation of a generator driven by an engine in the event the engine speed decreases below a predetermined value. Additionally, according to the present invention it is also possible to provide means capable of adjusting the amount of intake air fed to the engine combustion chamber, whereby in the event of decrease of the engine speed, for example, during idle running it is made possible to stabilize the engine speed rapidly and surely through control of generated energy for a short time and control of the amount of intake air for a long time. Furthermore, the present invention is applicable also to an operating cylinder number control type engine capable of bringing part of cylinders into a non-operative state.

    Abstract: A control unit is disclosed for controlling the driving torque of a generator driven by an engine in accordance with the number of cylinders to be operated, thereby to achieve stabilized operation. A voltage regulator is provided for varying the field current through the field coil of the generator so as to regulate the output of the generator. A circuit component including a pair of NC contacts in parallel with a resistor is connected in series between the field coil of the generator and a power source. Depending on the number of cylinders to be operated, the NC contacts are either closed to provide a low resistance path for current to the field coil or are opened to provide a high resistance path through the resistor.

Thus an accurate and highly reliable fuel supply is achieved over a wide range of engine operating condition from idling to maximum speed operation.
