  • Patent number: 6120409
Abstract: A variable transmission hub especially for a bicycle featuring a hub housing with spoke ends attached and rotatably mounted on the wheel axel. The conical hub has an internal surface with gears concentrically formed on the internal surface providing a set of concentric gears having a range of ratios. Independent gear assemblies couple each internal gear to a drive cylinder rotatably mounted on the axle and having a drive gear (sprocket) mounted on one end. A cam cylinder is mounted to slide on the axle which, at a selected location along the axle forces a clutch pin slidably positioned in the drive sleeve to engage the selected sun gear. The position of the sliding cam is selected by the user pulling on one end of a cable whose other end is secured to the sliding cam cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5514053
Abstract: An exercise apparatus for performing recumbent pedalling exercises including pedals slidably mounted on a substantially horizontal track, a belt having one end secured to each pedal extending back toward the user over an idler then to a drive shaft so that the belt unwinds from the drive shaft as the pedals are pressed along the track. Each drive shaft (one for each pedal) is coupled to a resistance wheel assembly through a one way clutch. The drive shaft is spring loaded so that each pedal returns to a starting position after being extend. Each pedal operates independent of the other pedal. In one embodiment, the resistance wheel assembly includes a fan in which resistance to turning can be controlled by controlling the width of expandable blades, by partially covering up the fan blades or by a variable transmission coupling the fan to the drive shaft. In another embodiment, the resistance wheel assembly includes a rubber wheel in contact with a roller.

  • Patent number: 5314392
Abstract: A pedal exerciser for performing stepper exercises including a pair of pedal cranks, each crank driving one of a pair of crankshafts that are coupled together by bevel gears such that, when one pedal is forced to rotate downward, the other pedal rises thereby providing reciprocating stairclimbing motion. Adjustable resistance to stepping is provided by a resistance pad against either the idler bevel gear or one or both crankshafts. The compact construction is amenable to positioning the exerciser under a desk or table for a seated user. A detachable frame with handles may be attached for an erect user.

  • Patent number: 5269200
Abstract: A clip device for detachably engaging the foot of a cyclist to the pedal of his bicycle. The pedal is basically a flat plate, rotatably mounted on the pedal crank, and having an opening extending from one side to the other. A cleat that is bolted to the cyclists shoe has a conical section that extends into the plate opening such that recessible catches on the wall of the conical section engage a groove on the inside wall of the opening. The groove is not a complete ring so that when the ankle is rotated, the catches are recessed thereby permitting withdrawal of the foot from the pedal.
