Abstract: An ink cartridge refilling station incorporates a receptacle for receiving an ink cartridge, a supply of ink and a refilling mechanism for automatically adding ink to the ink cartridge from the supply of ink. An ink cartridge, for use with the cartridge refilling station, includes a reservoir for holding a supply of ink and an input port communicating with the reservoir, the port being configured to receive ink from the automated ink refilling station.

Abstract: A printing method, includes receiving data at a printer; detecting a barcode in the received data; translating the barcode to an external network address; sending on the Internet or other external network an access request for a document to the external network address; retrieving the document from the external network address; and printing the document. In a further aspect of the present invention, the step is provided of printing the document inside a master document.

Abstract: System and methods for printer suggested upgrades using fuzzy logic analysis. A printer tracks printer usage relative to the features of the printer and the type of print jobs performed. Using a fuzzy logic protocol, the printer then selects among possible upgrades to select an appropriate upgrade based upon the tracked usage. A message is then generated sent to a network administrator, or other user, suggesting the selected upgrade.

Abstract: Methods and systems of error archiving for multiple devices have been detailed. The method includes when an error occurs at a first device of the plurality of devices, compiling error information about the error into a first error file and transmitting the first error file to a second device of the plurality of devices. When an error occurs at the second device, compiling error information about the error into a second error file. The method further includes compiling the first and second error files into a master error file. In addition, a system is described, the system includes at least two imaging devices in communication with each other. One of the at least two imaging devices is a master device. The master device is adapted to collect and store information from the at least two imaging devices and to detect class errors based on the collected error information.

Abstract: An imaging media cartridge for use in an imaging apparatus includes a first imaging media reservoir chamber and a second imaging media reservoir chamber. A removable barrier is disposed between the first imaging media reservoir chamber and the second imaging media reservoir chamber. By removing the removable barrier, a reserve of imaging media can be provided from the second imaging media reservoir chamber to the first imaging media reservoir chamber. In one embodiment the imaging media cartridge is a toner cartridge. In another embodiment the imaging media cartridge is a liquid ink cartridge.

Abstract: An electronic writing instrument includes a finger pad that supports a user's finger when the user is using the writing instrument. The user's finger rests on the finger pad in such a way that a fingerprint of the user's finger can be scanned by a fingerprint scanner located in the writing instrument to obtain fingerprint data. The fingerprint data is transmitted to a computing device where the fingerprint data is converted into a private key code. Alternatively, the fingerprint data is converted into the private key code in the writing instrument and the private key code is transmitted to the computing device. The transmission may be through a wired or wireless link. The private key code is used to create a public key code, which is incorporated into an electronic signature. The electronic signature may then be affixed to an electronic document to verify that the user signed the document.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for locating a network device relative to other network devices are useful for the management of wireless computing networks. Signal strength in a wireless network is indicative of a distance between a transmitting device and a receiving device. Through use of triangulation of the received signals at multiple receiving devices, the relative location of the transmitting device can be determined. Methods of refining the estimation of the expected location of the transmitting device are further provided. Defining an absolute location for at least one of the devices will permit determining the absolute location of the remaining devices based on these relative locations. Locating network devices relative to each other facilitates identifying a closest available resource within the network.

Abstract: A moisture-reducing paper tray including a desiccant that absorbs moisture from the environment of the paper tray and consequently the paper supply itself. As a result, the desiccant may become saturated as moisture is adsorbed. In one embodiment of the invention, the desiccant may be changed for a fresh desiccant. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, the moisture-reducing paper tray may also include a drying mechanism which includes a heating element, a blower and a humidity sensor. The humidity sensor is positioned to sense a humidity level in the paper tray. When a pre-selected humidity level in the paper tray is equaled or exceeded, the heating element and blower are energized and warm air passes into the paper tray drying the desiccant.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for suggesting upgrades in response to printer errors. In one embodiment, a printer contains an error detecting device and an embedded Web server in communication with a global computer network. If printer errors are detected, error messages are generated. Each error message is conveyed through the embedded Web server to an external computer. The external computer may receive error information conveyed by a large number of printers, which can optionally be monitored and analyzed. Information on a selection of printer upgrades is maintained in a memory of the external computer. The external computer compares each error message received to this selection, if an upgrade corresponding to an error message is available, the system conveys a message detailing the availability of the upgrade.

Abstract: A method for enabling a portable electronic device, such as a personal data assistant (PDA), a cellular telephone, or notebook computer, to identify remote, external devices with which communication by at least one wireless transmission protocol over which the portable electronic device is capable of communicating may be established. The method includes selecting a type of wireless transmission protocol to be used, receiving signals from devices that are remote from the portable electronic device, and, based upon such signals identifying the remote, external devices that can communicate by the at least one wireless transmission protocol. A list of these devices may then be generated. One of the devices may be automatically selected or selected by the user of the portable electronic device from such a list.
