    Abstract: An optical component is described. The component includes a base having a pocket and a light transmitting medium having a ridge. The ridge defines a portion of a light signal carrying region in the light transmitting medium. The light transmitting medium is positioned adjacent to the base such that the ridge extends into the pocket. In some instances, the light transmitting medium includes a second ridge extending away from the pocket.
