Publication number: 20200249724Abstract: This is directed to connecting two or more elements using an intermediate element constructed from a material that changes between states. An electronic device can include one or more components constructed by connecting several elements. To provide a connection having a reduced or small size or cross-section and construct a component having high tolerances, a material can be provided in a first state in which it flows between the elements before changing to a second state in which it adheres to the elements and provides a structurally sound connection. For example, a plastic can be molded between the elements. As another example, a composite material can be brazed between the elements. In some cases, internal surfaces of the elements can include one or more features for enhancing a bond between the elements and the material providing the interface between the elements.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 21, 2020Publication date: August 6, 2020Inventors: Scott A. Patent number: 10572695Abstract: A tamper-proof computing device used in conducting a point-of-sale transaction. The tamper-proof computing device comprises a touch-screen display. In some embodiments, an ITO layer is deposited on the touch-screen display that has a tamper line embedded in the ITO layer, such that the tamper line is susceptible to breaking upon unauthorized physical manipulation, and the tamper line is in communication with a microcontroller that is configured to detect the tamper, and to render the tamper-proof computing device inoperable. The tamper line can be a single line trace embedded in the ITO layer or a cluster of traces embedded in the ITO layer. A method of manufacturing comprises forming a tamper line in an ITO layer, depositing the ITO layer on the display and coupling the tamper line to a security microcontroller.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 2017Date of Patent: February 25, 2020Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Max Guise, Isreal Blagdan, Bradley T Hall, Trent Weber

Patent number: 9608389Abstract: A connector for receiving a cylindrical plug includes a body defining a plug aperture and a cavity for receiving the cylindrical plug. A plurality of electrical contacts in communication with the cavity make electrical connections with the cylindrical plug and retain the cylindrical plug. A microphone is coupled to the body such that the plug aperture and the cavity provide an acoustic path to the microphone. The microphone may be at an end of the connector opposite the plug aperture or on a side of the connector adjacent the plug aperture. The connector allows a microphone to be added to a device, such as a mobile telephone, without the need for an additional external aperture. The microphone in the connector may operate with a second microphone and processing electronics in the device to provide audio processing functions such as noise cancellation or audio beamforming.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 2012Date of Patent: March 28, 2017Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Shaohai Chen, Phillip George Tamchina, Richard Hung Minh Dinh, Jae Han Lee, Trent Weber, Michelle Yu, Adam D. Patent number: 9298956Abstract: A technique for tamper protection in an electronic device is disclosed. A conductive mesh is affixed onto one or more interior surfaces of the outer housing of the device. The mesh includes one or more conductive traces coupled to one or more detectors within the device. The detector can detect an open-circuit or short-circuit condition resulting from an unauthorized attempt to open the housing, and output a signal to trigger an appropriate countermeasure. The electrical contacts along the trace that are monitored can be selected differently from one manufactured unit to the next, and can be selected based on a randomness function. The selection of contacts may be made during or after manufacturing of the device. The mesh can include multiple metal traces that run very close together, in parallel, across one or more interior surfaces of the housing, allowing detection of both open-circuit and short-circuit conditions.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2013Date of Patent: March 29, 2016Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Jeremy Wade, Thomas Templeton, Trent Weber, Michael Lamfalusi
