The method may also comprise treating the algal cell to disrupt a cell wall of the algal cell. One aspect of the invention relates to a method for transforming an algal cell, the method comprising preparing a composition comprising a nucleic acid molecule and a cell penetrating peptide and exposing the algal cell to the composition. In some embodiments, the CPP is Transportan, Penetratin, an HIV Tat fragment, or a polyarginine, or a variant thereof.
