Patent number: 8457631Abstract: A wireless communications system includes a radio network facilitating wireless communications with a wireless subscriber unit, a dispatch application server providing dispatch communications services to the subscriber unit via the radio network, and an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) infrastructure including a Proxy-Call Session Control Function (P-CSCF) and a Serving-CSCF (S-CSCF). The P-CSCF notifies the dispatch application server of subscriber unit registration events, allowing the dispatch application server to provide dispatch communications services without initiating a separate registration process. Dispatch communications are routed between the wireless subscriber unit and dispatch application server through the P-CSCF, bypassing the S-CSCF of the IMS infrastructure.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2007Date of Patent: June 4, 2013Assignee: Nextel Communications Inc.Inventors: Ojas T. Choksi, Ramesh Kalathur, Trinh D. Vu

Patent number: 8358999Abstract: Systems and methods for providing dispatch call features are provided. The dispatch call features include the ability to maintain multiple simultaneous dispatch calls and the ability to manage multiple dispatch stations. The maintenance of multiple simultaneous dispatch calls feature allows a dispatch station to place a current dispatch call on-hold to either initiate a new dispatch call or to accept an incoming dispatch call. The management of multiple dispatch stations feature allows a number of dispatch stations to be associated with one or more dispatch station identifiers. When a dispatch call is made to one of the dispatch station identifiers, all associated dispatch stations are paged. The first dispatch station to respond to the page is connected to the incoming dispatch call.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2006Date of Patent: January 22, 2013Assignee: Nextel Communications Inc.Inventors: Trinh D. Patent number: 8306203Abstract: When an ad hoc group call is initiated, or at a subsequent time but before the group call is terminated, a call originator may set a parameter to establish a time limit. The time limit is invoked when the call originator drops from the group call. The time limit may be set to zero time indicating that all participants will be disconnected and the group call will be terminated immediately upon exit of the call originator. The time limit may also be set to a predetermined amount of time, which indicates that the group call may remain up until the predetermined amount of time expires. If no parameter to establish a time limit is selected, the group call may remain indefinitely even after the originator exits the group call.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2006Date of Patent: November 6, 2012Inventors: Karalyn M. Szuszczewicz, Trinh D. Vu, Jeffrey Scott Posner

Publication number: 20120134352Abstract: A method of enabling a push-to-talk (PTT) connection between a first user on a first network and a second user on a second network is provided. According to the method, a web application registration server on the first network receives and authenticates login information from the first user, forwards the login information to a PTT server, and assigns a temporary network identity from a pre-allocated pool of network identities to a client of the first user. After the PTT registration has been authenticated, a PTT call may be conducted between the first user and the second user. The first network may be an internet protocol-based network. The second network is a multiple-access network for cellular devices, such as a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) network or any other wireless network.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 30, 2010Publication date: May 31, 2012Applicant: Nextel Communications, Inc.Inventor: Trinh D. Patent number: 8054780Abstract: A method and system for aggregate registration and transparent data notification to services during IMS registration. A network entity, such as Serving Call Session Control Function (S-CSCF) may receive an aggregate registration request that includes a plurality of service identifiers and associated service-specific data sets. The aggregate registration request is sent by a user agent or other similar program on behalf of a user. The network entity then sends a notification to each particular service of the plurality of services, including in each notification the service-specific data set for the particular service. The user may thus supply service-specific data to each service during IMS registration, obviating the need for the user to directly and separately contact each service for the purpose of supplying service-specific data.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2008Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Arun Manroa, Trinh D. Patent number: 8055262Abstract: Several embodiments of an IMS communications network are disclosed. In one embodiment, the network comprises a plurality of dispatch application servers (DAS), an S-CSCF, and an event notification server. The S-CSCF is adapted to receive an IMS registration request from a dispatch client, authenticate the registration request, send a registration confirmation to the dispatch client, and send a notification indicating the registration of the dispatch client to an event notification server. The event notification server is adapted to receive the notification from the S-CSCF, select a DAS, and send a notification to the selected DAS indicating an assignment to provide dispatch service to the dispatch client. In another embodiment, the registration notification to the event notification server is sent from the dispatch client, instead of the S-CSCF.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2006Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: Nextel Communications Inc.Inventors: Trinh D. Vu, Ojas Choksi, Ramesh Kalathur, Moshe Stoler, Hung Bui, David Kuan

Patent number: 7702347Abstract: Systems and methods for creating temporary dispatch talk groups are provided. A console receives a request to create a temporary dispatch talk group. The temporary dispatch talk group includes at least two existing talk groups. The console accesses a group database in a publicly-accessible wireless network. The temporary dispatch talk group is created in the group database, along with an identification of the lifetime of the temporary dispatch talk group. A temporary dispatch talk group identifier is provided to at least one member of the temporary dispatch talk group. A talk group call for the temporary dispatch talk group can then be initiated using the temporary dispatch talk group identifier.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2005Date of Patent: April 20, 2010Assignee: Nextel Communications Inc.Inventor: Trinh D. Patent number: 7606593Abstract: A system and method for priority dispatch communications are provided. Priority access to the communication network is provided. Additionally, barge-in for active dispatch communications in a publicly-accessible network are provided. When the user is in an active dispatch communication with another communication station, and a dispatch communication request from a second communication station is received, it is determined whether a priority value of the second communication station is higher than a priority value assigned to the user or the other communication station. When the priority value for the second communication station is higher, the dispatch communication between the user and the other communication station is suspended, and a dispatch communication is established between the user and the second communication station.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2005Date of Patent: October 20, 2009Assignee: Nextel Communications Inc.Inventor: Trinh D. Patent number: 6185436Abstract: A personal communication system handset having a plurality of slots provided therein. Each one of the slots is adapted to store a corresponding one of a plurality of removable/insertable subscriber identity modules. The subscriber identity modules have stored therein different subscriber information. A user is thereby able to subscribe to two, or more, different providers and is able to remove at least one of the modules for use in another handset. Further, the modules are credit card size and are therefore less likely to be lost, or misplaced, than a chip sized module. An electronic switch is disposed in the handset for electrically coupling one of the modules to a transceiver in the handset selectively in accordance with a program stored in the handset based on a signal received by the transceiver from a base station cell. The selected module provides the base station cell with the stored subscriber information. Thus, the handset can automatically select the proper module based on the stored program.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1997Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Siemens Information and Communication Networks, Inc.Inventor: Trinh D.
