    Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus and method for sizing a distal portion of a femur during knee arthroplasty. A sizer according to the invention includes a body that can be removably attached to the distal portion of the femur and that is operable to support a module that is removably attachable to the body. The body with attached module is operable for use in measuring the size of the distal portion of the femur. The module can be attached to the body either before or after the body has been attached to the distal portion of the femur and can be detached from the body either before or after the body is detached from the distal portion of the femur.

    Abstract: A method for releasing buttress material from a stapling instrument when the buttress is attached to the instrument by an adhesive is disclosed. The method includes providing stapling instrument comprising first and a second opposed tissue clamping members movable between an open position, for receiving tissue therebetween, and a closed position for stapling tissue therebetween. At least one of the first and second clamping members houses a plurality of staples, and a strip of buttress material is releasably attached to the first tissue clamping member by an adhesive. The method then involves moving the instrument to its open position and inserting tissue between the clamping members. Thereafter, the method involves releasing the buttress material from attachment to the first clamping member by closing the instrument and stapling the buttress material to the tissue. Whereby the movement of the staples breaks the adhesive bond and releases the buttress material from the first clamping member.

    Abstract: A partially tied surgical knot is disclosed. It has a proximal loop, first loop, plurality of knot loops, and a core loop received in a common loop core formed by the knot loops. The partially tied knot can be readily converted into a non-slip knot to provide enhanced suture knot security. The technique for deployment ensures the user that the conversion will be performed consistently each time, therefore providing a consistent knot security for multiple applications. Also disclosed is an assembly which features the partially tied knot in combination with a core tube to facilitate the conversion of the partially tied knot into the fully tied knot.

    Abstract: A Suture cartridge assembly is disclosed. The cartridge assembly has a partially tied surgical knot formed from a suture filament for facilitating the fastening of body tissue. It also has a core tube to which the partially tied knot is secured. Further, the assembly has a suture cartridge which contains a tube slot for receiving the core tube. The assembly makes it easier to convert the partially tied surgical knot into a non-slip knot to securely and consistently fasten tissue. It is simple in construction, and it is readily adaptable to inclusion on various surgical instruments. When a first partially tied surgical knot is converted to a completed knot, the completed knot and its core tube can be removed from the cartridge, and a second partially tied knot secured about a new core tube can be received into the suture cartridge to enable multiple knot placements.

    Abstract: An improved method of forming a non-slip surgical knot for fastening tissue, and the knot prepared by the improved method, are disclosed. A partially tied knot which has a first loop and knot loops formed about the first loop to create a common loop core receiving the first loop is initially provided. The distal end of the suture filament from which the partially tied knot is made is passed through the tissue, and it is then fed through the first loop to form a tissue-fastening loop. The improvement involves pulling the first loop and a portion of the suture filament through the common loop core, thus eliminating the first loop and forming a distal loop positioned adjacent the common loop core. When this improved method is used to form the non-slip knot, a knot with a consistently high knot security can be formed without the need to provide a tension on the suture filament which exceeds the breaking strength of the suture.
