Patent number: 9750515Abstract: A patella clamping device has a handle having a first arm and a second arm, the arms each having a first gripping end and a second clamping end. The clamping ends are movable towards the opposite arm by action on the gripping end of each arm. The clamping ends of the first and second arms comprise opposed clamping surfaces. The clamping end of each arm has a body portion having spaced first and second surface defining the opposed surface of each arm. A plurality of pins extend from the first to the second surface. A rotatable toothed jaw member is pivotally mounted on each of the pins. The jaw member has at least one tooth extending outwardly of the opposed surface of each arm for engaging the patella. Each body has a third surface spaced from the second surface to create a slot for receiving a saw blade.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2014Date of Patent: September 5, 2017Assignee: Howmedica Osteonics Corp.Inventors: Mohamed Soliman, Troy Allen McMillen, Robert J. Publication number: 20150245859Abstract: A cervical plate apparatus includes a cervical plate body having a plurality of screw receiving passages defined therethrough. Received about each of the passages is a zero-step locking member which is operatively associated with the passage and configured to automatically lock the head of the screw in place within the passage when the screw is seated within the passage to attach the cervical plate to the cervical vertebrae. The locking member is selectively movable to an unlocked position. A retention structure is configured to retain the locking member in either the unlocked or locked position without further engagement of the locking member by a surgeon, so that when the locking member has been moved to the unlocked position, it is held in that position so that the surgeon can then remove the screw or screws without having to simultaneously hold the locking member in a retracted position.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 15, 2013Publication date: September 3, 2015Inventors: Troy Allen McMillen, Nicholas Poker, Travis Lane Turley, Nephi Zufelt

Patent number: 9017414Abstract: Disclosed is a trial implant having a body and a tab. The body may include a recess and may be sized to closely approximate a permanent implant. The tab may be more durable than the body, and may be disposed within the body and wholly contained within the recess. Also disclosed is a method of performing a trialing procedure including providing a trial implant as described, providing a tool to attach to the tab, inserting the implant onto a resected joint, evaluating and extracting the implant. The same procedure may then be performed with a second implant. The method may further include a tool having an attachment portion that is substantially or wholly contained within the recess. A kit is disclosed including a plurality of trial implants of incrementally different shapes and sizes. The kit may further include a tool. Also disclosed is a method of making the described implant.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 2008Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: Howmedica Osteonics Corp.Inventors: John Jude Grecco, Troy Allen McMillen

Patent number: 8740910Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus and method for sizing a distal portion of a femur during knee arthroplasty. A sizer according to the invention includes a body that can be removably attached to the distal portion of the femur and that is operable to support a module that is removably attachable to the body. The body with attached module is operable for use in measuring the size of the distal portion of the femur. The module can be attached to the body either before or after the body has been attached to the distal portion of the femur and can be detached from the body either before or after the body is detached from the distal portion of the femur.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2006Date of Patent: June 3, 2014Assignee: Howmedica Osteonics Corp.Inventors: Troy Allen McMillen, Carlos E. Publication number: 20080161824Abstract: An apparatus, method, and system for sizing a distal portion of a patient's femur during knee arthroplasty. The femur is sized by positioning the patient such that the distal femur portion of the patient is in a field of view of a sensor array; attaching a femoral sizer to the distal femur portion, the femoral sizer including a tracker that is operable to provide signals to the sensor array; manipulating the sizer while observing a display that displays an image based on the signals provided by the tracker to the sensor array; and determining the size of the distal portion of the femur by observing the sizer in response to an indication provided on the display.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 27, 2006Publication date: July 3, 2008Applicant: Howmedica Osteonics Corp.Inventor: Troy Allen McMillen
