  • Patent number: 9943935
Abstract: A method for making a valve stem seal, comprising the steps of providing a metal retainer having a top portion and a body portion. The body portion having a first section and a second section. In a first state, the first section of the body portion is cylindrical and the second section of the body portion is cone shaped. Providing a hollow mold. Inserting the metal retainer into the outer mold piece, inserting the inner mold piece into the metal retainer, and then securing the inner and outer mold pieces to each other. Filling a cavity around the top portion of the metal retainer with an elastomeric compound. Removing the metal retainer and the formed rubber sealing element from the mold pieces, and pressing downward over the formed valve stem seal to compress the second section of the body portion radially inwardly.

  • Publication number: 20040201181
Abstract: A seal for a flange includes two separate sealing lips to seal the interfaces between the flange and the intake manifold and the cylinder head. One lip seals against the head surface when the flange is bolted to the cylinder head. The other lip seals around the intake manifold when the intake manifold, such as a tubular intake manifold, is inserted into the flange. The flange seal is made of elastomeric material, such as rubber, and is integrally bonded to the flange made of metal, such as steel or aluminum, during the molding process to form a flange seal having a one-piece construction. The flange seal also includes a gap between one of the sealing lips and an outer surface of the flange that provides a space for the displaced rubber to flow when compressed by the cylinder head. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract that will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure.

  • Patent number: 6752398
Abstract: A valve stem seal assembly incorporates a cylindrical retainer having an axis and an upper end about which symmetrically and circumferentially arranged, alternating first and second sets of fingers have radially inwardly depending upper ends. The first set of fingers is generally parallel to the axis and the upper ends are generally perpendicular to the axis to engage a first exterior annular groove of an elastomeric seal body. The first set of fingers provides for axial attachment of the seal body to a top of a valve guide. The second set of fingers is generally arcuate and the upper ends extend radially inwardly to engage a second exterior annular groove of the seal body. The second set of fingers eliminates the need for a garter spring used by traditional valve stem seal assemblies by generating a force to urge the sealing lip against a reciprocating valve stem.

  • Patent number: 6269787
Abstract: A rocker cover gasket assembly is provided that is suitable for use in connection with a valve assembly for an internal combustion engine. The rocker cover gasket assembly includes a carrier, a plurality of valve stem seals integral with the carrier and at least one connector, wherein the connector is connected to two adjacent valve stem seals to form a linkage or a web of valve steam seals. The connectors and carrier may contain one or more handle members to improve manual or mechanical handling of the assembly. The connectors and portions of the carrier may be formed with thinned portions to allow for selective removal of individual valve stem seals in the event of wear or failure.
