Publication number: 20070158695Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing a meshed power and signal bus system on an array type integrated circuit that minimizes the size of the circuit. In a departure from the art, through-holes for the mesh system are placed in the cell array, as well as the peripheral circuits. The power and signal buses of the mesh system run in both vertical and horizontal directions across the array such that all the vertical buses lie in one metal layer, and all the horizontal buses lie in another metal layer. The buses of one layer are connected to the appropriate bus(es) of the other layer using through-holes located in the array. Once connected, the buses extend to the appropriate sense amplifier drivers. The method and apparatus are facilitated by an improved subdecoder circuit implementing a hierarchical word line structure.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 8, 2007Publication date: July 12, 2007Applicants: HITACHI, LTD., TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INCORPORATEDInventors: Goro KITSUKAWA, Takesada AKIBA, Hiroshi OTORI, William McKEE, Jeffrey KOELLING, Troy HERNDON

Publication number: 20050218735Abstract: In one example, an FDB motor having a shield member is provided. In one example, the method includes disposing a first member and a second member for relative rotation about an axis of rotation. An annular shield member is attached to the first member, the shield member disposed adjacent a fluid reservoir for containing a bearing fluid. The reservoir is filled through an aperture (e.g., a fill hole) in the shield member. Thereafter, the aperture is at least partially sealed. The aperture may be hermetically sealed via one or more laser pulses. In other examples, a two piece shield is provided for shielding a reservoir without a fill hole.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 1, 2005Publication date: October 6, 2005Inventors: Troy Herndon, James Lee, Jeffry Leblanc, Robert Nottingham, Norbert Parsoneault, Thaveesinn Vasavakul, James Bowdoin, Christopher Woldemar, Jerry Weingord

Publication number: 20050219742Abstract: In one aspect, a fluid dynamic bearing system is provided. The system may include a first member and a second member disposed for relative rotation about an axis of rotation and having opposing substantially planar surfaces defining an axial gap. A bearing region is disposed circumferentially around the axis of rotation and a relatively large gap region is disposed circumferentially around the bearing region, the large gap region having an average gap distance greater than the bearing region. The large gap region further includes at least one support pad forming a localized narrow gap distance in the axial gap to provide support between the opposed surfaces at a radial distance greater than the bearing region. For example, the support pad may support the surfaces against an externally applied force or moment that may tilt one member relative to the other.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2005Publication date: October 6, 2005Inventors: Troy Herndon, Christopher Woldemar, Jose Cordova, Alan Grantz, Norbert Parsoneault

Publication number: 20050207060Abstract: In one example, a FDB motor having a top-cover attached, EM biased bearing system is provided. The motor includes a shaft and rotor disposed for relative rotation, and an axial limiter for restricting axial movement of the rotor with respect to the shaft, wherein the axial limiter is wet or lubricated during contact. The limiter is spatially fixed with respect to one of the shaft or the rotor and disposed with an axial end surface opposing a surface portion spatially fixed with respect to the other of the shaft or the rotor to form a gap therebetween. The gap may be filled with a fluid such as bearing lubricant, thereby providing a lubricated or wet contact surface to restrict axial movement of the shaft and rotor. Additionally, one or both surfaces may include a groove or slot to provide circulation of fluid through the gap.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2005Publication date: September 22, 2005Applicant: SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY LLCInventors: Jeffry Leblanc, Robert Nottingham, Troy Herndon, Norbert Parsoneault, Lynn Le

Publication number: 20050207913Abstract: For motors having a journal with one or more groove regions and a shaft for relative rotation in the journal, aspects include providing a dual tapered shaft. The shaft may be tapered by the application of a wear resistant coating at least opposite the groove regions. The coating introduces a shaft taper from near a top end and from near a bottom end towards the shaft middle. The shaft taper may provide for improved pumping efficiency. The coating may be applied in various processes such as chemical vapor deposition or physical vapor deposition to establish a thickness gradient of coating material from near the top end and near the bottom end towards the shaft middle. In one example, the coating includes a DLC coating. Additionally, shaft portions may be shielded to prevent coatings thereon.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 17, 2005Publication date: September 22, 2005Applicant: SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY LLCInventors: Jeffry Leblanc, Troy Herndon, Mohammad Ameen, Raquib Khan

Publication number: 20050015791Abstract: A robust spindle motor is provided having added shock resistance for fluid containment. In an aspect, a high-speed centrifugal capillary seal contains a fluid reservoir extending between similarly rotatable components. Fluid is recirculated through the motor and substantially around a counterplate. Proper axial positioning of motor components and stiffness is maintained in motors supporting heavy loads such as a disk drive memory system having a weighty disc pack. In an aspect, two separate thrust surfaces provide oppositely directed axial forces acting on motor components. In an aspect, a single thrust plate that is comparatively small is utilized, reducing power consumption. Also, a thrust bearing situated inboard of a capillary seal forms a comparatively small diameter thrust plate gap. The comparatively small diameter thrust plate gap increases efficiency and characteristics including surface flatness, run out and perpendicularity are improved.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 24, 2004Publication date: January 20, 2005Inventors: Troy Herndon, Jeffry LeBlanc, Robert Nottingham
