Publication number: 20180121633Abstract: Computer-implemented methods and systems are provided digital content data over a network. In accordance with one implementation, a method is provided that includes: generating, in response to a download request for digital content data, a download address for the digital content data, and transmitting the download address to a client; authenticating, at a content server, the download request; downloading, over the network to the client, the digital content data after the download address is authenticated; receiving, from the client, a request for a license to access and playback the downloaded digital content data; authenticating, at an application server, the license request; and providing, to the client device, the license for the digital content data after the license request is authenticated, the license enabling the client device to access and playback the digital content data.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2017Publication date: May 3, 2018Inventors: Depeng BI, Stephen Christopher GLADWIN, Troy Steven DENKINGER, Timothy Scott FRANKLIN, Bart Richard CILFONE, Anne Marie PEWTERBAUGH, Jeffrey Jonathan SPURGAT

Patent number: 9886566Abstract: Digital content distribution systems and methods are provided for distributing for digital data files, such as digital audio and video data files. In accordance with one implementation, a token-based authentication system is provided that does not require knowledge of the individual user requesting the download of digital content data or real-time access to user account information. Instead, the token-based authentication system embeds the authentication information, or token, in the download request information itself. In this way, the download or content server authenticates the download request using the token contained in the download request information and therefore does not require any additional information to carry out this authentication, such as access to user account information.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2016Date of Patent: February 6, 2018Assignee: Oath Inc.Inventors: Depeng Bi, Stephen Christopher Gladwin, Troy Steven Denkinger, Timothy Scott Franklin, Bart Richard Clifone, Anne Marie Pewterbaugh, Jeffrey Jonathan Spurgat

Patent number: 8606684Abstract: A digital content distribution and subscription system for digital data files provides subscribers with music or video from streaming digital data or locally-stored digital files on demand for a fee. After registration onto the system, a subscriber may select from a relatively wide variety of available digital content from the streaming digital data or the locally-stored digital files. The subscriber may then select songs from various playlists which causes encrypted digital audio files for the selected music to be downloaded to the subscriber's personal computer (pc). A license key is downloaded to the subscriber's pc to unlock the selected songs to enable them to be decoded and played on the subscriber's pc or remote audio equipment for a predetermined period of time. At the expiration of the predetermined time period, the license key expires, thereby preventing further playback of the encrypted audio data files.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2001Date of Patent: December 10, 2013Assignee: AOL Inc.Inventors: Depeng Bi, Stephen Christopher Gladwin, Troy Steven Denkinger, Timothy Scott Franklin, Bart Richard Cilfone, Anne Marie Walsh, Jeffrey Jonathan Spurgat

Publication number: 20040030929Abstract: A system for secure and non-secure distribution of digital content of digital content, such as digital audio or video data, over the Internet or other computer network starting from a server to a personal computer or other computing platform and then through conversion to analog audio or video for listening or viewing on an audio or video player. An important aspect of the invention includes wireless transmission of either digital audio or video data or analog audio or video from the computing platform, through an audio or video transmission peripheral, to an audio or video receiver device and finally to an audio or video player.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 6, 2003Publication date: February 12, 2004Inventors: Depeng Bi, Stephen Christopher Gladwin, Troy Steven Denkinger, Jeffrey Jonathan Spurgat

Publication number: 20040024688Abstract: A digital content distribution and subscription system for digital data files, such as digital audio and video data files, which provides subscribers, for example, with music or video from locally-stored digital files or on demand for a fee. The system may optionally provide streaming digital data as well as locally-stored digital files. After registration onto the system, a subscriber may select from a relatively wide variety of available digital content, for example, music content ripped from a high-quality digital source to provide relatively consistent digital quality to subscribers. In one exemplary implementation, subscribers may subscribe to a predetermined number of songs slots for a period of time, for example, about 200-400 song slots per month. The subscriber may then select songs from various playlists which causes encrypted digital audio files for the selected music to be downloaded to the subscribers's PC.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 6, 2003Publication date: February 5, 2004Inventors: Depeng Bi, Stephen Christhoper Gladwin, Troy Steven Denkinger, Timothy Scott Franklin, Bart Richard Cilfone, Anne Marie Walsh, Jeffrey Jonathan Spurgat

Publication number: 20020087996Abstract: A system for an interactive remote control wired or wireless, of an audio or video playback application running on a personal computer or other computing platform. This interactive control includes playback of current audio or video content or selection of new audio or video content or lists of content for playback. The wireless interactive remote control device, or navigator, may contain an audio or video browser for simplifying interactive control by integrating control of a variety of content, for example, music, video, and Internet radio, independent of whether this content exists locally on the computing platform or is accessed over the Internet or some other computer network.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 6, 2001Publication date: July 4, 2002Inventors: Depeng Bi, Stephen Christopher Gladwin, Troy Steven Denkinger, Jeffrey Jonathan Spurgat, Hoyet Harrison Andrews

Publication number: 20020057795Abstract: A secure platform in which the decrypting or decoding of secure audio or video data is done on a peripheral device of the computing platform, thus preventing software applications and drivers running on the computing platform from having access to the digital audio or video data after it has been decrypted or decoded. The unprotected digital audio or video data may then be converted from a digital format into an analog format before leaving the peripheral device, thus making exact digital reproduction no longer possible due to the inherent degradation of audio or video quality in the conversion process from digital to analog and then back to digital.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 11, 2001Publication date: May 16, 2002Inventors: Jeffrey Jonathan Spurgat, Stephen Christopher Gladwin, Depeng Bi, Troy Steven Denkinger
