Abstract: Mobile electronic devices and methods are disclosed that operate an electroactive polymer (EAP) transducer to provide tactile indications to a user. A mobile electronic device can include a housing with at least one EAP transducer that is at least partially disposed in a surface of the housing. The EAP transducer has first and second electrodes with an EAP material coupled therebetween. An EAP excitation controller controls an electric field across the first and second electrodes to regulate deformation of the EAP material. The mobile electronic device can include a communication controller that communicates with a wireless communication device using at least one wireless communication protocol. The communication controller generates an alert signal in response to receiving a phone call/data message from the wireless communication device. The EAP excitation controller responds to the alert signal by repetitively varying the electric field across the EAP transducer to generate a vibration therefrom.
