  • Patent number: 6356330
Abstract: An active matrix liquid crystal display device is provided for realizing a high uniformity of display luminance with lower power consumption, a higher contrast, and a wider viewing angle. In a common wire eliminated (common-less) IPS-type active matrix liquid crystal display device, an opposing electrode 107 is arranged above a signal wire 104 and a thin film transistor (TFT) through an insulating layer. The opposing electrode 107 and a scanning wire 101 shield the signal wire 104 or the TFT to prevent light from leaking from edge portions of the signal wire 104 as well as the TFT from malfunctioning due to a current generated by leaked light, thereby realizing the elimination of a black matrix (BM), a reduction in size of a black matrix, and planarized substrates, thus resulting in a higher aperture ratio and an improved uniformity of cell gap.

  • Patent number: 6356331
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes a pixel electrode and a counter electrode which are respectively disposed in different layers in a liquid crystal-side pixel area of one of transparent substrates disposed to oppose each other with a liquid crystal interposed therebetween. The counter electrode causes an electric field having a component parallel to the transparent substrates to be generated between the counter electrode and the pixel electrode. One of the pixel electrode and the counter electrode is formed on a side closer to the liquid crystal than the other electrode is to the liquid crystal, and the other electrode is formed of a transparent electrode extended outwardly from at least a periphery of an area on which the one electrode is superposed.

  • Publication number: 20020011980
Abstract: A display device is constituted by a display module which determines a plurality of pieces of pixels as belonging to one block unit, selects the plurality of pixels in each block unit at the same time and displays a picture image by adding one or a plurality of specific patterns each having different spatial frequencies of each block unit; a display control unit which controls the display module; a picture image signal generation unit which generates picture image signals; and a computing circuit which generates the specific patterns each having different spatial frequencies while weighting the same based on the picture image signals for every block unit. Thereby, a display device which reduces the signal clock frequency as well as increases the signal writing time, enhances the opening rate of an LC panel and permits a highly fine display and a high speed motion picture display, is obtained.

  • Publication number: 20010048420
Abstract: A display apparatus is capable of adapting to sufficiently increase display frequency even with an optical modulation element which has fairly low response speed and can rewrite image at high speed. The display apparatus of a system separately performs mapping of display data for optical modulation element of each pixel and application of gradation information. The display apparatus divides a display period of one frame into a plurality of sub-frames, controls input value for the optical modulation element independently per each sub-frame in the plurality of sub-frames, and displays image with gradation display by the optical modulation element.

  • Patent number: 6300926
Abstract: There is provided an active matrix type liquid crystal display, which hardly generates display unevenness incident to electrode dimensional fluctuation caused by variations resulting from the electrode formation process, and which is excellent in mass producibility and in high image quality. An active matrix type liquid crystal display using the horizontal electric field system, wherein dimensional fluctuation in the active elements and the stored capacity formation portion, and finish dimensional fluctuation in the electrode for applying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer occur simultaneously, and variations in effective driving voltage caused by fluctuation in the active element dimension act in a direction to compensate for variations in the optical quality caused by dimensional fluctuation of the electrode for applying the electric field.

  • Publication number: 20010011981
Abstract: In order to eliminate cross talk and horizontal brightness variation and improve the display quality and aperture ratio in an active matrix-addressed liquid crystal display in which an electrical field is produced generally in parallel to its substrate, the load on the common electrodes or scanning lines is reduced. Respective pixels aligned in the direction of any scanning line selectably applied to which a scanning signal is caused to change their optical properties alternately for juxtaposed pixels. On the other hand, in a plurality of pixels defined in a plurality of areas surrounded by a plurality of signal lines and a plurality of scanning lines, respective pixels which are juxtaposed in the direction of the scanning line are arranged to form a storage capacitance respectively between its pixel electrode and a common line or scanning line corresponding thereto, which is different between juxtaposed pixels.
