  • Patent number: 6842415
Abstract: A method for recording information is disclosed in which an information recording medium is irradiated with a recording energy beam power-modulated into at least a record power level and a record-ready power level lower than the record power level. When forming a mark portion of a predetermined length, the radiation energy of the energy beam is increased as compared with when forming a mark portion of a different length before or after the first pulse of an energy beam pulse train including at least a pulse for forming the mark portion. Also, only in the case where the energy beam is modulated by the power lower in power level than the record-ready power level after the last pulse of the energy beam pulse train including at least one pulse for forming a mark portion and the mark portion is followed by a space portion of a predetermined length, the particular radiation energy of low power level is reduced as compared with when the mark portion is followed by a space potion of a different length.

  • Publication number: 20040223434
Abstract: Recording parameters are decided so that the time control information on at least the front edge and the rear edge of a parameter forming a mark of twice size or above of the laser spot diameter focused on the recording medium is substantially proportional to the recording linear velocity. The mark is recorded and reproduced at a predetermined linear velocity to obtain an electric signal waveform having a time width Tm. A parameter is decided so as to control the laser pulse for recording information so that a voltage value change amount at two points at a distance Ts (Ts<Tm/2) in the time axis direction before and after the time position Tm/2 from the front edge of the waveform is substantially constant for the recording linear velocity change. Identification information indicating the parameter is described on the recording medium.

  • Publication number: 20040145993
Abstract: In a writing system in which the linear velocity changes during a write operation, it is difficult to determine the writing waveform parameters for all possible speeds through test write operation. Therefore, some representative values must be used to estimate them. This means that it is necessary to enhance the accuracy of this estimation process. The present invention determines a condition for a high speed and an optimum write condition for a low speed through test write operation and obtains a condition for a middle speed based on a recommended value written on the disk. Especially, the present invention can waveform-convert the waveform parameter for a multi-pulse portion of a multi-pulse writing waveform without changing its energy to produce an accurate waveform parameter.

  • Publication number: 20040141432
Abstract: An optical information recording and reproducing apparatus that determines the quality of recorded information through a beta value from information on the amplitude of a reproduced signal and if the beta value is outside the permissible range, outputs information on error to a host computer. Immediately after the information is recorded the information is reproduced first and second kinds of information including information on the amplitude of the reproduced signal and performance information or error information obtained from a binarized signal of that reproduced signal, respectively are used to determine the quality of the reproduced signal. Recording power condition is changed based on the first kind of information and a recording pulse width condition or reproduction condition is changed based on the second kind of information to ensure the reliability of the information recorded.

  • Patent number: 6650607
Abstract: A recording medium in which information is to be recorded is permitted to get into a first state by a first power level of an energy beam and permitted to get into a second state by a second power level higher than the first power level of the energy beam. The information is recorded on the recording medium by moving the energy beam and the recording medium relatively to each other and irradiating the recording medium with the energy beam so that the first and second states are formed with predetermined lengths and at predetermined intervals on the recording medium. Four power levels (first, second, third and fourth power levels) are used as the power level of the energy beam. The information is recorded while the second power level is increased to x times and the first, third and fourth power levels are increased to y times. The information recorded as described above is reproduced, and reproductive jitter is observed.

  • Publication number: 20030067856
Abstract: The mark-length recording system whereby information is recorded by changing the lengths of a recorded portion and an unrecorded or erased portion has a problem that, when new information is recorded in an already recorded region, the newly recorded information may deteriorate in reliability because the length and width of the newly recorded mark are different from those of the previously recorded mark and a part may exist that is not completely erased at the time of overwriting. The invention widens a setting freedom of the recording power and controls the length and width of the recorded mark by making the effective recording pulse length (the length from a rise of a first pulse to a fall of a last pulse) satisfy a relation: (effective recording pulse length)<(recording code length, i.e., the length of data to be recorded)−2T(twice the reference clock cycle).

  • Patent number: 6463020
Abstract: For application of asymmetry trial writing onto phase-change recording discs, this invention is intended to determine an optimum level of recording power accurately. Single pattern or random pattern signals are recorded, and phase differences between PLL clock edges and data edges are detected using reproduced signals to determine a threshold value of recording power where a predetermined percentage of phase differences occurs. The threshold power is then multiplied by a constant to provide a optimum level of recording power. Further, there are disclosed arrangements for determining an optimum power condition at a point where an error count (jitter) is minimized, and determining an optimum power condition as an averaged power level existing between low and high power conditions.
