  • Patent number: 5062496
Abstract: A structure for mounting an air cleaner in an engine compartment. The air cleaner is supported on an engine and a transmission having different vibration frequencies. Therefore, the frequency of an applied vibration force does not coincide with the natural frequency of the air cleaner, with the result that resonance of the air cleaner is prevented and reliability of the air cleaner is improved.

  • Patent number: 4981115
Abstract: Each cylinder bank of a V-type engine is provided with a plurality of cylinders which are not in sequence in firing order. A collecting intake passage is connected to each of the cylinders of both banks by way of independent intake passages which pass between the two banks and have the same effective channel length, and each of the independent intake passages is arranged so that it extends substantially perpendicularly and upwardly from a cylinder. Both collecting intake passages are arranged above one of the cylinder banks, and the collecting intake passage which is connected to a cylinder of the other cylinder bank is arranged on the independent intake passages connected to the other collecting intake passage. By doing so, overlapping of both collecting intake passages can be avoided and thus the height of the intake system can be reduced. The independent intake passages and the collecting intake passage which overlaps the former have a common wall.

  • Patent number: 4831978
Abstract: An internal combustion engine comprises reinforcing means secured to an edge portion of a lower opening of the cylinder block at a peripheral edge portion thereof. The reinforcing member has a plate-like shape, has connecting parts extending laterally with respect to the direction of the engine for connecting the facing edge portions of the lower opening of the cylinder block and is formed with openings for passage of oil at the front portion thereof and is secured to an oil pan at the lower surface of its front portion. The rear portion of said reinforcing means forms a part of an outer lower wall of a crank case containing a crank shaft and bifurcates into an upper branch extending backwardly and upwardly and a lower branch extending backwardly and downwardly. The upper branch has an end portion for connection with the cylinder block and the lower branch has an end portion for connection with a transmission case.

  • Patent number: 4606318
Abstract: A Karman vortex generator is disposed in the air intake passage of an internal combustion engine. The frequency of the Karman vortex generated by the generator is detected by a Karman vortex frequency detector to measure the flow rate of intake air. The frequency of the Karman vortex is in proportion to the flow rate of intake air with a Strouhal number being the constant of proportionality thereof. However, when the flow rate or the flow velocity of intake air is within a certain range, the Strouhal number fluctuates and the proportionality between the Strouhal number and the flow rate of intake air is broken. This range is shifted when the kinematic viscosity of intake air changes. The kinematic viscosity of intake air depends upon the temperature thereof.

  • Patent number: 4510902
Abstract: A vehicle including an internal combustion engine having a fuel supply system for providing a supply of fuel, a deceleration detecting device for detecting that the engine is in deceleration, a heater having heat exchanger for bringing air in the vehicle into a heat exchange relationship with engine cooling medium so that the air in the vehicle is heated by the engine cooling medium, a heater operation detecting device for detecting that the heater is in operation, a fuel supply control device responsive to outputs of the deceleration detecting device and the heater operation detecting device for interrupting the supply of fuel when the engine is in deceleration and the heater is not in operation.

  • Patent number: 4406126
Abstract: A secondary air supply system for an internal combustion engine having a supercharger comprises a secondary air supply valve operable in response to the pulsating flow of exhaust gases emitted from at least one of engine cylinders. The remaining engine cylinders are communicated to an exhaust gas purifying device through a supercharger so that the exhaust gases emitted therefrom can drive a turbine of the supercharger. The exhaust gases emitted from such at least one of the engine cylinders are directly supplied to the exhaust gas purifying device in admixture with a secondary air supplied by the valve to facilitate an effective and efficient purification of the exhaust gases as a whole.

  • Patent number: 4326337
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the piling profile of a blast furnace charge is disclosed. The apparatus includes a guide pipe having a distal end extending into the furnace. Means are provided for moving the guide pipe radially into and out of the furnace and for detecting the radial position of the guide pipe. A rope extends through the guide pipe to the distal end thereof and forms a loop at the distal end which extends around a pair of pulleys and which includes a plumb movably mounted on the loop. Means are provided for winding and unwinding the rope and for detecting the tension of the rope so that the contact of the plump with the charge can be detected. Means are provided for determining the position of the rope at such contact and for measuring the piling profile of the furnace charged based upon the guide pipe position and rope position at said contact.

  • Patent number: 4301726
Abstract: A combustible stencil held by holders is disposed at a position some distance apart from the end face of a hot material; immediately thereafter, a coating composition is sprayed onto the hot material through perforations of the stencil from behind to carry out the marking; the stencil is used only once and burned by the potential heat of the hot material upon marking; and a new stencil is used each time for marking. The combustion starting time is controlled by previously moistening the stencil as necessary.
