Creating large bandwidth line defects by embedding dielectric waveguides into photonic crystal slabs
Patent number: 6957003Abstract: We introduce a general designing procedure that allows us, for any given photonic crystal slab, to create an appropriate line defect structure that possesses single-mode bands with large bandwidth and low dispersion within the photonic band gap region below the light line. This procedure involves designing a high index dielectric waveguide that is phase matched with the gap of the photonic crystal slab, and embedding the dielectric waveguide as a line defect into a crystal in a specific configuration that is free of edge states within the guiding bandwidth. As an example, we show a single mode line defect waveguide with a bandwidth approaching 13% of the center-band frequency, and with a linear dispersion relation throughout most of the bandwidth.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2002Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior UniversityInventors: Wah Tung Lau, Shanhui Fan -
Publication number: 20050101971Abstract: A cylindrical rotor for an epilating device of a kind which includes a support body containing an electrical motor which in use provides a rotational drive to the cylindrical rotor. The cylindrical rotor includes a rotor body, a shaft extending through the rotor body about which the rotor body can rotate. At least one array of radially extending blade pairs is positioned to present mutually interacting pinching edges of each the blade pair at the circumference of the cylindrical rotor. Each blade pair includes a rotor body stationary blade and a movable blade. Each of the movable blades of the array is mounted on a shuttle carried by the rotor body which is in a cammed disposition with the shaft. The cammed disposition is of a kind with cooperative surfaces of the shaft and the shuttle which upon the relative rotation of the shaft with the rotor body and the shuttle carried with the rotor body, moves the shuttle in an oscillating manner.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 10, 2003Publication date: May 12, 2005Inventors: Tung Lau, Ming Leung
