Patent number: 9264750Abstract: One or more servers in an IP network receive, from a user device, a selection of live streaming content and assemble an index file including links to chunks of the selected live streaming content and links to advertising files for insertion within the selected live streaming content. The one or more severs send, to the user device, a link to the index file associated with the selected live streaming content and receive, from the user device, a streaming request for the selected live streaming content. The one or more servers send, to the user device, the index file including the links to chunks of the selected live streaming content and the links to advertising files for insertion within the selected live streaming content. The user device may use the links to combine the chunks of the selected live streaming content and the advertising files into a single linear presentation. A standards-based client for the user device is used with the server side implementation.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2010Date of Patent: February 16, 2016Assignee: VERIZON PATENT AND LICENSING INC.Inventors: Robin M. Patent number: 8938770Abstract: A server receives a request for delivery of media from a client, and determines if the client has a capability to tune to a quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) channel carried by a first network. The server sends a message to the client to instruct the client to tune to the QAM channel to receive the media via the first network if it is determined that the client has the capability to tune to the QAM channel. The server sends the media to the client if it is determined that the client does not have the capability to tune to the QAM channel.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2010Date of Patent: January 20, 2015Assignee: Verizon Patent and Licensing Inc.Inventors: Robin Montague Mathews, Tushar Saxena, Samuel O. Patent number: 8925009Abstract: A network device sends a first set of images associated with an electronic program guide (EPG) to a client device. The network device determines that an image of the first set of images has been modified, and receives one or more calls for displaying the first set of images at the client device. The network device sends the modified image, or one or portions of the image that have been modified, to the client device without sending a remainder of the images in the first set of images, or without sending the remaining portions of the image.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2010Date of Patent: December 30, 2014Assignee: Verizon Patent and Licensing Inc.Inventors: Robin Montague Mathews, Tushar Saxena

Publication number: 20120316965Abstract: A network device in a customer premises network collects profile data for a client device of multiple client devices in the customer premises network and sends the client profile data to a remote provider network. The network device receives, from the remote provider network, a group of advertisement files for targeted advertising to the client device and stores, in a memory, the group of advertisement files. The network device detects an advertisement insertion cue in linear program content being streamed to the client device, selects an advertisement file from the stored group of advertisement files, and inserts the selected advertisement file into the linear program content being streamed to the client device.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 9, 2011Publication date: December 13, 2012Applicant: VERIZON PATENT AND LICENSING INC.Inventors: Robin Montague Mathews, Michael P. Patent number: 7917953Abstract: Methods and systems can reduce the spread of computer files or data on a network by obtaining and tracking times of arrival for chunks of data transmitted on the network. The times of arrival for a node can be transformed into time-series and periodograms computed from the time-series. Successive periodograms can be compared to determine changes in the strongest peaks of the periodograms. If a new peak is identified, a search for the occurrence of the peak in previous periodograms can be conducted. If no peak having a matching frequency is found, a search for the peak in the periodograms for neighboring nodes can be performed. If matching peaks are found, the associated data stream can be classified. Predictions of the timing and length of associated data packets can be used to randomly interrupt transmission of associated data packets resulting in reducing the spread of the classified data stream.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2009Date of Patent: March 29, 2011Assignees: Verizon Corporate Services Group Inc., Raytheon BBN Technologies Corp.Inventor: Tushar Saxena

Patent number: 7574597Abstract: A system acquires information about communication among wired or wireless nodes [110, 210] in a network [100, 200] by intercepting chunks of data in the network by a wired or wireless tap [120, 220] located among the wired or wireless nodes [110, 210] in the network. Characteristic information [400] about the intercepted chunks of data may be obtained. The characteristic information may include times of arrival [410] of the chunks of data at the wired or wireless tap [120, 220] and identifiers of wired or wireless source nodes [420] that sent the chunks of data. At least one signal may be constructed to represent the characteristic information over time.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2002Date of Patent: August 11, 2009Assignee: BBN Technologies Corp.Inventors: David B.
