    Abstract: The production of a melanin-like compound by introducing an inactivated virus into a culture of bacteria is disclosed. After introduction, the inactivated virus causes a phenotypic change in the bacteria. When introduced into a media containing tyrosine, these modified bacteria produce a melanin-like compound, pyomelanin. The bacteria will continue to produce pyomelanin until they are removed from the tyrosine source.
