  • Patent number: 11928952
Abstract: A safety system for supervision of a child involving interaction between a pre-trained first adult conveying responsibility for supervision of the child to a pre-trained second adult. The system utilizes a specific interactive scripted conversation between the first adult and the second adult to assign responsibility for supervision of the child to the second adult. Following this, the first adult transfers a wearable to the second adult to provide a visual and tactile transfer of the responsibility of supervision of the child from the first adult and acceptance of the responsibility of supervision of the child by the second adult corresponding to the interactive conversation between the first adult and the second adult.

  • Publication number: 20170034939
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for supporting a bezel region of a display device. A display device can include a first substrate and a second substrate coupled by an edge seal. An array of shutter-based display elements can be positioned within an image forming region between the first and second substrates. A plurality of mechanical supports can be positioned within a bezel region outside of the image-rendering region and within the edge seal. Along a side of the bezel region that extends in a direction perpendicular to a direction of shutter motion, adjacent mechanical supports can be separated from one another by a gap that is longer than each of the mechanical supports in the direction perpendicular to the direction of shutter motion.

  • Patent number: 9299275
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for shutter-based EMS light modulators controlled by electrode actuators that include complementary sets of corrugations or teeth along the opposing beams of the actuators. The complementary sets of corrugations substantially engage one another when drawn together via an actuation voltage. By applying the actuation voltage across the opposing beams of such an actuator, the beams are drawn together both by the electromotive force resulting from the electric field acting between the portions of the beams that are substantially perpendicular to the direction of actuation of the actuator, and by fringing fields between the sides of the corrugations, which are substantially parallel to the direction of actuation. The additional fringing fields provide for increased electromotive force for a given input voltage.

  • Publication number: 20160079953
Abstract: An integrated MEMS and IC system (MEMSIC), as well as related methods, are described herein. According to some embodiments, a mechanical resonating structure is coupled to an electrical circuit (e.g., field-effect transistor). For example, the mechanical resonating structure may be coupled to a gate of a transistor. In some cases, the mechanical resonating structure and electrical circuit may be fabricated on the same substrate (e.g., Silicon (Si) and/or Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI)) and may be proximate to one another.

  • Publication number: 20160077327
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for reducing actuation voltage and switch time for an electrostatic actuator capable of actuating a light modulator. In one aspect, a light modulator can be formed on a substrate. The light modulator can include an electrostatic actuator. The electrostatic actuator can include a load beam electrode coupled to a shutter of the light modulator, and a drive beam electrode. The drive beam electrode can have a front end and a rear end. An anchor can be coupled to the drive beam and positioned away from the front end and the rear end.

  • Publication number: 20160042700
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for a shutter-based light modulator. The shutter includes at least three depressions extending outward from the surface of the shutter. Any two adjacent depressions of the at least three depressions define a gap therebetween to reduce damping forces caused by fluids in which the shutter is immersed. In some implementations, the at least three depressions can be aligned into more than one row, each row including more than two of the at least three depressions, along the surface of the shutter. In some implementations, to improve structural stability of the shutter, depressions in one row are staggered with respect to depressions in another row.

  • Publication number: 20150279282
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for shutter-based EMS light modulators controlled by electrode actuators that include a compliant inner beam electrode positioned between a movable beam electrode and a fixed beam electrode. A first voltage is applied to the movable beam electrode, and a sufficiently different voltage is applied to one of the compliant beam electrode and the fixed outer beam electrode. During actuation, the movable beam electrode is drawn towards the compliant inner beam electrode, while the combination of the movable beam electrode and the compliant inner beam electrode are further drawn to the fixed beam electrode.

  • Patent number: 9134552
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for incorporating tip-gap adjustment features (TGAF) in actuators of shutter assemblies. The TGAF are incorporated into a drive beam of the actuator during the formation of the shutter assembly over a mold. The TGAF are configured such that they develop a mechanical stress or stress gradient. When the shutter assembly is released from the mold, the stress or stress gradient in the TGAF bend the drive beam such that a tip-gap between the drive beam and a load beam of the actuator is reduced. The reduced tip-gap, in turn, reduces an actuation voltage needed to actuate the shutter assembly.

  • Publication number: 20150092261
Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus utilizing flexures in a display. In some implementations, an electromechanical systems (EMS) device can include flexures that have low stiffness along the axis of motion of a light modulator, and high stiffness in other directions. The flexures may include one or more beams mechanically coupling a MEMS structure to an anchor. The beams may be coupled to a hinge portion, the hinge portion being configured to suppress out of plane motion by the MEMS structure and the flexures. The flexures also may suppress out-of-plane motion using a stiffened portion. The stiffened portion can be mechanically coupled to the hinge portion or at least one beam of the flexure. By varying the cross-section geometry of the stiffened portion, the stiffness of the stiffened portion may be controlled to increase the force required to move the flexure in an out-of-plane direction.
