    Abstract: A differential cover may be supported by a support plate to form a cover assembly. The differential cover and the support plate may be welded together. The support plate may overlap with and strengthen a flange portion of the differential cover. The support plate may be a one-piece support plate which is a support plate ring or a two-piece support plate which is segmented into support plate halves. The flange portion of the differential cover may be affixed to a banjo axle case. The banjo axle case may be used in an electric beam axle to house a differential. The increase in strength provided to the flange portion by the support plate may enable decreasing the thickness of the differential cover and reducing the weight of the electric beam axle.
